A meat processing COVID nexus: South Dakota’s governor resisted ordering people to stay home. Now it has one of the nation’s largest coronavirus hot spots.

South Dakota is home to one of the largest single coronavirus clusters anywhere in the United States, with more than 300 workers at a giant pork-processing plant falling ill. With the case numbers continuing to spike, the company was forced to announce the indefinite closure of the facility Sunday, threatening the U.S. food supply.

Oh definitely. I see safe as part of the reason behind slaughter of live animals. You see it killed you know it’s not sick, you know it’s not been sitting around unrefridgerated. I don’t see it as race cultural, more as preservation. My grandma used to buy chuck roast and have the butcher grind it because she didn’t trust pre ground beef

    She's a crazy-eyed, mouth-breather:
Increasingly exasperated local leaders, public health experts and front-line medical workers begged Noem to intervene Monday with a more aggressive state response.

“A shelter-in-place order is needed now. It is needed today,” said Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken, whose city is at the center of South Dakota’s outbreak and who has had to improvise with voluntary recommendations in the absence of statewide action.

But the governor continued to resist. Instead, she used a media briefing Monday to announce trials of a drug that President Trump has repeatedly touted as a potential breakthrough in the fight against the coronavirus, despite a lack of scientific evidence.

“It’s an exciting day,” she boasted, repeatedly citing her conversations with presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Sorry if I'm late to the secession party, but why can't Montana be part of the great Canadian empire? Doesn't it share a full border with Canada?

Or were those replies to the independent Republic of washigonia?

And more importantly(because I'm wearing star wars underwear right now) : does the great Canadian empire have access to the death star?
It's a war of the mind and we're armed to the teeth.

A Newfoundland could feed a family of 5 or more. It's probably more a holiday meal in China when the whole family gathers.

My grandmother said they used to eat horsemeat during WW2 when other meat was hard to come by. I don't think they ever ate dog though.

    Fuck...

ROME—Italian newscaster Alessandro Politi was shocked when he tested positive for COVID-19 on March 11. He and other colleagues were swabbed out of an abundance of caution after a co-worker contracted the virus. The 30-year-old had a slight fever and a sore throat, but none of the chest tightness or other nightmarish symptoms so many have suffered.

Following the Italian Health Institute guidelines for releasing someone from self-isolation, Politi was tested again two weeks after his positive swab. But, fever-free and with no symptoms at all, he tested positive once more. The test was carried out a week later, 21 days after his diagnosis, and he still tested positive for the virus. Now, 30 days later, Politi has just tested positive again, calling into question just how long the novel coronavirus stays in some people’s systems and whether that might play a role in why, despite a month-long draconian lockdown, Italy just can’t seem to shake the virus.

Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

    Dear Old Goat/other docs:

One thing I was pondering the other day...I wonder what effect the virus host's body temperature has on the viability of the virus's survival? For example, would the temporary reduction in human core body temperature through artificial temporary cooling have any effect on the virus survival, inherent 'strength' and ability to compromise human internal cellular function? Would it 'weaken' the virus so that it is more vulnerable to targeted therapies and cures via meds? No clue here, just a layman brainstorming based on the anti inflammatory reaction of the human body to cold water immersion/wim hoffing...and other reports of folks surviving severe hypothermia and being restored to normal function after reheating the body...just wondering what effect, if any, the cooling of core temperatures has on the little viruses and such.
    Master of mediocrity.

    In other news from Italy...

An AW139 of the Polizia di Stato (Italian State Police), was flying a routine patrol mission when the crew spotted a group who had gathered on the rooftop of a building for an Easter Sunday BBQ. But, as the chopper approached the block, fireworks were aimed at the helicopter, forcing it to remain at safe distance before going away.

The scene, that several media have called “a reckless show of defiance”, was filmed from the helicopter as well as from neighbours. Some videos posted on Youtube and on news websites, include scenes filmed by those who were taking part in the BBQ on the roof of an apartment block. “These people are nothing but idiots. We will track them down and they will face the full force of the law,” said Mayor of Palermo Leoluca Orlando.
