Fun fact, Le Pigeon in Portland is one of my favorite restaurants, but the best squab I've ever had in my life was at Blackbird in Chicago.

High smoking rate in Italy and Spain plus 2nd hand smoke. USA still pretty high but half those two.

Lots of super drunk and stoned people on the road weaving around elderlies trying to get provisions… have seen three bad crashes already.

It’s like Christmas and St Pats and 4th of July rolled into one.

US death rate attributed to CV19 could also be low due to under-testing. Did that patient die of normal influenza or CV19? Normal flu kills 12,000 to 61,000 over the course of one season (which is ~13 weeks).

I prefer my squab to be $2.29 a pound, available in boneless thighs, and you can buy by the 8 pack.

Biogen exec fled to China in search of emergency Covid-19 testing, care — and now faces criminal charges

A Biogen employee who may have contracted Covid-19 at the strategy meeting in Boston fled to Beijing alongside her family. And now she faces criminal charges for lying about her condition on the way back.

The company confirmed to Endpoints News that the woman, identified by Chinese officials as Ms. Li, works for the company but stopped short of answering whether she attended the conference or was exposed to SARS-CoV-2 on another occasion.

“We believe Ms. Li is a U.S. based Biogen employee who made a personal decision to travel to China,” a spokesperson wrote in an email. “We are deeply dismayed by the situation as reported by the media in China.”

Details provided by Beijing public health officials had suggested that her case might have been one of over 100 now tied to the strategy meeting Biogen hosted of senior managers, top staff and guests — 175 people in total — at the Marriott Long Wharf on Feb. 26-27. Li, a longtime resident of Massachusetts, attended a company meeting “with a colleague who later tested positive for Covid-19” on those exact dates, according to local media reports.

The episode highlights a stark reversal of dynamic as the coronavirus pandemic, which originated in Wuhan, China, breaks out across the world at a terrifying pace. As domestic cases subside, China has shifted its focus to catching imported cases. Meanwhile, having bungled its initial response with a shortage of kits and rigid testing guidelines, the US healthcare system is still catching up on the capacity to diagnose and treat patients suspected to have Covid-19.

Getting tested in the US without a certain travel history or contacts with someone who did was essentially a fool’s errand in early March. Biogen staffers were refused testing initially and shooed away because they did not meet the federal criteria. Only after Biogen acknowledged its first cases and asked its staffers not to overwhelm emergency rooms did the Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s set up temporary testing facilities in their ambulance bays. The government has since also relaxed its criteria.

For 10 days leading up to her arrival in Beijing, Li apparently attempted three times to get tested for the coronavirus, The Paper reported based on a press briefing. When she was denied a third time, she decided to fly herself, her husband and her son to China, where she was from originally (Chongqing to be specific).

Li told Chinese officials that she first began experiencing chills on March 1. Symptoms worsened over the next two days, including fever, nausea, diarrhea, muscle pain and fatigue, leading her to visit a hospital on March 3. She was prescribed Tamiflu and sent home. At the same hospital on March 5 and March 10, chest scans came back normal, but on March 11 there were signs of pneumonia. Still, she wasn’t admitted.

Then on March 13 Li, on an antipyretic, boarded a Beijing-bound plane in Los Angeles with her family.

She managed to pass the body temperature checks conducted by the airline at LAX. But a few hours after takeoff, she notified a flight attendant that she was having trouble breathing and feeling tired. She also told the crew about a brief fever a week prior — but that she hadn’t taken any medications.

Since Li said she was traveling alone, she was moved to a back-row seat, separated from other passengers with a curtain, assigned to a specific toilet and ordered to wear a mask.

Then, two hours before landing, she finally revealed to the crew that someone at her company in the US had been infected, that she’d been having a fever and that her husband and child were also on the flight.

The whole family was then huddled together in the isolation zone and sent to the hospital once they landed. Her husband reportedly experienced fatigue; her son was asymptomatic. Both are being monitored in quarantine.

All of that points to what state-owned China News Service has decried as lying. Local police are building a case against Li for hindering the prevention and treatment of an infectious disease, state news agency Xinhua wrote.

    Rrat#1: But he started it.
    Rrat#2: No I didn't, he did.
Mom: OK. Both of you. Go to your rooms.

US death rate is still low because it is early. While we have increasing numbers of cases, there are lots of small outbreaks. So all those small numbers add up to a big one, but the individual outbreaks are still small, but growing rapidly. In a couple of weeks it could be a whole different story.

No. Oddly enough the first time I had the dream I was in an old family car - a 1976 Buick and the second time (last night) it was the family station wagon. I def. had a hard time sleeping last night. Had to do some yoga breathing to calm and center myself before I could fully relax and drift off and I had taken my CBD/THC tincture. Thinking I may need to up my dosage in these troubled times.
