The movies are a fun thing to see at the theater pre-season and hang with your buds. That's not such a bad thing. For content, though, it's hard to beat what Cody's doing. Plus, 10-15 minutes is about right.

I think this is a fair question, but your core assumption is wrong.

If you look at something like the Fifty Project you see a new take on ski films that people are loving because it’s new. I’m super excited about Bentchetler’s Grateful Dead film also. Again, something new and creative. Hell, my favorite “segment” of the last few years is the video of Sage and Pep chasing each other down from the top of Collins at Alta. Two great skiers out having fun and showing their skills and creativity. No better stoke than that.

The Sage and Pep vid is one of my favorites as well, always wished there were more flicks out there like that.

Fucking well said! With a few exceptions here and there, ski movies stopped being interesting or really having any variety more than a few years ago at this point.

It's a complete damned if you do/don't scenario.

A few years back Sherpas Cinema and Sweetgrass were putting out some very different films with varying results. Even if I didn't love each one I still watched them all because....variety!!! And a few were actually pretty awesome. But I remember choruses of people on here lambasting the art house vibe, etc., wanting straight porn instead. And you don't see full lengths from either of those houses anymore (couldn't tell you exactly why). I still saw MSP, TGR, etc during those years too, balanced it out nicely. Maybe we'll get something different out there, but web-only seems like it's exploded and is largely occupying that creative outlet.

I do agree with plugboots though; even though it's cookie cutter the fall ritual of going to see a ski flick from one of the heavies at a theater is hard to replicate. You just have to know the product you are getting. And I dunno, maybe supplant what you're not vibing with booze!

I think this is a fair question, but your core assumption is wrong.

There is no reason that every rider in a ski movie has to go “full throttle” the whole time. I think it makes the movies overall less interesting. My favorite segments lately have been ones where it’s clear that the athletes are having fun and show their personalities.

I also think that it makes skiing less accessible and appealing to potential new skiers. Again, most people who aren’t expert skiers already don’t aspire to rip a spine line in AK, so when they watch movies like this it’s easy to think it’s not for them.

I also don’t think it’s fair to ask the athletes to put their lives on the line for every shot in their segment. It’s not sustainable, and we’ve lost way to many friends, colleagues and icons over the years. It causes lots of pros to step back from skiing once they start having families. It keeps women and POC who aren’t willing or able to commit to that out of the films.

How many skiers could make stuff like this if they had the resources behind them? How many more people we’ve never heard of could change the sport for better if the definition of success wasn’t just going 110% all the time?

That’s my critique of the industry and especially of MSP. It’s old thinking, and they haven’t cared to address it in any constructive way.

I agree with all of that. Going back even further, Pléhouse and Eric Iberg's (eMedia?) early 2000s movies were nothing like the TGR, MSP, or PBP movies at the time. Even of those big 3, only 2 are still around and their movies have evolved toward being pretty bland. Will we ever see something like Brad Holmes having a rap battle with Shane McConkey again? My guess is no, but in that very particular case, that might be a good thing.

Pléhouse! Yessss...I own Whiteshine. I loved that film. Another out of the mold was Rage Films, who I loved dearly. Kinda found them by accident on here many years back. They used to mix a little big mountain, with b/c booters and tons of urban/jib...but slowly subtracted out the big mountain (cost had to be why). Anyway, I'm about as far from an urban/jib skier as you could find, but man...their films were absolutely gorgeous with some of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. I loved watching them, and bought a bunch. I miss them.
