I’m running 32T x 10-50 Eagle and am occasionally jealous of her.
I’m over climbing.

Do you both have SRAM direct mount cranks and both on same spacing (boost, GXP or BB30)?
If so spend $45 bucks and get her a 26t and put the 28 on your bike?
I'd sell you my 26T but I want to keep it incase the Mrs Dee and I go for a week long Alps MTB trip where a lower gear would make the week a little less painful.

28x50 (0.56) is lower than anything you could get in the 3x/2x days, which generally maxed out at 22x36 (0.61).

If you really want to play with the numbers of a 22x36 on an old 26" bike would be 15.86 Gear Inches
Vs 28x50 on a 29er is 16.40 gear inches. so not as low.... (28x50 on a 27.5 would be 15.56)

26x50 is like doing a track stand all day, you spend as much energy balancing at that speed then you would pushing a 28 tooth.... OK, not really, but that seems like you'd be crawling.

There may have been some niche options, but 64/104 cranks dominated the market then and AFAIK 22t is the smallest you can go on 64BCD. I could be (probably am) wrong.

I had (maybe still have) the Avid micro-adapter, which let me use a 24T small chainring on a 3x7 drivetrain. 24x28 low gear felt super low back then... in the days when bikes came with 26x28 or 28x28.

You could also run the Suntour Microdrive with a Shimano cassette for some super low gearing (20t inner) circa the early 90’s.

If I slow pedal a 32 x 50, I go the same speed as if I just walk. I've timed this. I don't get the desire for a 26t - that's like sub-crawling speed.

I put a 20t ring on my bike when I did the continental divide thing with a bob trailer.

I really did go that slow.

What were cassettes then though, like 32 max? Plus 26" wheels. I could work out the gear inches but I don't care. I'm just bragging about being a proud owner of a 20t ring at some point.

I custom shimmed a Shimano 11-23 cassette to run w microdrive and a 22/32/44 drivetrain back in the day. Mounted on a specialized ultimate carbon. 21 pound w a suspension fork in 1992. That was a sweet bike. I did weigh 25 pounds less and road 10x as much so the gearing was fine....

Just curious, did you do this timing on a steep hill? Speed can be deceptive in this, since flat ground needs more than a steep climb, step length changes, etc.

Not that anyone should be pairing a 26 with a 50, but even 26 x 50 does not (quite) get to a 1:1 when tire diameter/crank length is considered (say, 694/350 for 650B, would net 3% less force at the tire/3% faster). Unless you're Johnny Highway Sanders with a 26" out back.

Is her 42 a SRAM xx1 or x01? The OneUp 44 add on makes that cassette a great 10-44 that is light.

Jono, I’d say try the Sunrace 46T Cassette. I think their newer stuff is way better than previous iterations.

I've paid attention to it in a bunch of situations. All fairly steep, since I'm not going to bother walking my bike unless it's a fairly legit climb.

30 x 50 on a 29er isn't ridiculous. Ideally, I'd run that in the spring when I'm out of shape, then bump to a 32 once my legs have some pedal time. But I'm lazy, so I just run the 32 all the time and force myself to get in shape a little quicker.

I run 32 x 42 on my 29er (Canfield Riot, ~31# build, 1x10) and I thought I was a pussy for not running the 40.

1. Biggest disadvantage of ultra-small chainring is that they can exacerbate backpedal chain drop and can make spinning the big cogs noisier.
2. Lots of internet warriors talkin about how low end gears are unnecessary and somehow counterproductive. This has been a constant each time cogs have grown and spiderless chainrings have allowed for smaller rings.
3. Despite the prevalence of #2, very few people move in the direction of making things harder after getting used to it being easier.
