I’ve skied Diablo. It was fun.
After hemming and hawing all day and monitoring NOAA, I decided to go for it this weekend. If I wasn't flying out of town on Monday, I'd just wait for Tuesday or Wednesday, but I can't enjoy Tahoe pow from the East Coast.
Driving up early tomorrow to beat the storm and working remotely. Hoping to get some afternoon turns in at Northstar. Saturday storm riding Northstar. Sunday... TBD. If 80 is open early AM I am going to make a break for it and forgo Sunday riding. If not, I'm probably go to go around the Lake first thing in the morning, maybe take a couple laps at Heavenly if they're spinning the lifts, then jump on 50. Hoping the Super Bowl keeps the resorts/roads relatively empty.
I don't care if it takes me 10+ hours to get back to the Bay, long as I get home before Monday evening for my flight.
I see nothing about winds that would keep Heavenly from opening stuff all weekend. Certainly delayed openings. Keep in mind on sunday 50 will close. Not a question of if but when and how long. It will definitely close for bombing and then clearing if necessary. it will likely close for accidents several times. without closing it will still be backed up through Meyers into town from 10 am onward. Then the closures make it worse and the likelihood of experiencing at least one go up dramatically when the standard wait to get to the pass is an hour plus.
Also consider n* may not have anything steep enough to ski if they get 2'

Thanks for warnings. I have a board from Japan, built for low angle and deep accumulation so I'm not too worried about Northstar storm riding. I know that place well enough to know a few spots. If the winds are not so bad, I might hit Squaw instead, I picked Northstar mostly because of its wind protection.
I fully expect 50 to be stop and go with extended Avy control breaks and spin outs. But I also don't expect it to just categorically shut down the way 80 will. Bringing a sleeping bag and stove with food just in case. And of course chains. I may be a Bay Area tourist but I'm thankfully not THAT guy.
Reno NWS adding to the hype train...
Fri/Sat :Sun-Tues:1-2+ feet of snow are likely above 7000 feet with up to a foot down to 6000 feet along US 395 in Mono County and the Tahoe BasinIt`s possible we could see up to 2-3 feet of snow around Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Lakes during this time, and another 3 to 5 feet in Sierra above 7000 feet
The models have really been ramping up the QPF totals in the last 24 hours. Also looks like SoCal could get hammered in the 2nd week of February on top of everything that falls this week.
Sunday Commute Options for SLT: 1.) Drive from Cal base, through town, up Kingsbury, down to Minden, up Luther, to Meyers. 2.) Wait it out and watch the stooper bowl somewhere in town
Been a good bet in the past, one mag a few pages back reported that it took 2 hours to get from Luther pass to Meyers with traffic backed up so badly which I believe cause I was watching the traffic apps with 88 and 80 closed and 50 periodically closing there was no good way to go anywhere except east.
I rarely use Waze but was trying to find a way for my girlfriend to get home one night to take care of her dog, which she had to bail on till the next day as it would have taken her hours to make the 15 minute drive. Anyway I found it amusing to read the pop up threads for people stuck in traffic and the cranky locals chiming in, I even took a few screen shots

Why would you deal with CalBase and town at all when you can just start at Stage and stay on the nv side in case upper lifts do close, and then already be at the top of Kingsbury.
Also for the road to get backed up from Luther, 80 has to close and they have to have signs up that 80 is closed prior to traffic reaching 580 so they can divert. And 88 needs to be closed too. That thing two weeks ago is the only time i've seen that happen. Normally the traffic just comes over spooner although maybe this is another effect of the traffic apps.

BA just updated. Combining the upper end for the storms thru Tues brings in 89"

Definitely an effect from traffic apps, was interesting that every time I checked about 30 minute intervals, the route recommend as the fastest was changing, I presume because those routes would become gridlocked even more as folks routed that way. Some of the routes suggested were pretty amazing just to get from my house to Meyers and pretty sad to see as residential hoods were getting hammered.
I do remember a time it took me 4 hours to get from the calbase to my house about 10 years ago (about 15 to 20 minutes with normal traffic) when 88 and 80 were closed. At least I was able to use some side streets to bypass some big portions of traffic, today those Locals Knowledge options are not available.
At least theirs not much of a chance for 88 and 80 to close this weekend![]()
Need to read up, but thinking my day tripper plans for KW Sunday are a wash. Fuck. Wish I liked football and then I could just drink the day away in rainy Santa Cruz.
Have fun out there all. Sunday through Wednesday looks might fine.
Of course I'm going to be in Chicago this weekend - figures. Seems like a good storm cycle to 'accidentally' get stuck in the mountains on Monday and Tuesday.
If anyone wants some Protests I can sell and drop off today (;
BA has 80+ mph winds on Saturday and 100 mph Sunday. Is Heavenly really that protected? It's an honest question. I got a Tahoe Local pass for the first time after having a Kirkwood only for the last decade. Haven't skied Heavenly in a long time, but considering it for these storms.
an empty shithole on lake tahoe is my personal paradise
those 100mph are currently forecast for sunday night. Also, looking at his and the NWS forecast I get the impression it's gusts to 80 and 100mph, which really isn't that bad. There is almost always something open at the heave. What it is depends on the direction. Best case scenario is to start at stage get into mott and hope they close dipper. But the main thing is to stay where you start.
they do seem to be plagued with other closure reasons lately which can't be planned for (electrical and whatnot)

Reading this thread leaves me so bipolar.
Lady and I are thinking of a move later this year, and Reno is high on the list of places to consider.
On the one hand, the deep pow days posted in here leave you salivating.
On the other hand, the travel issues even coming from the East side seem like a real suck on good days.
Is midweek skiing the only legit option for those living around Lake Tahoe anymore?
Forecast:
Snow Will Fall
Resorts Will Have the Goods and the Good Terrain will be CLOSED!
Snow Will Continue to Fall
Roads Will Close
Sunday the only thing happening will be indoors and maybe some base accessible lifts. (ALL Upper Mountains Closed)
Sunday the Roads will also be closed on and off. The Spur will open again Tuesday.
Traffic will be an ultimate shit show. 5 hours up and 12+ hours home even if you try to leave first thing, you will be listening to the game from your car.
Next Week #flatlanders will be at home where they should have stayed. And us "Shit Hole" locals will be enjoying the goods on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Have Fun!
I'm cool with this, as long as you Kirkwood Bro Brah's stay away from Heavenly when 88 closes- TahoeBc
Live on Mt Rose highway and ski at Mt Rose.
If I have to drive at 15mph between Mt Rose and my house, due to ice/tourons/whatever, it still only takes 30-40 min at the most. Otherwise it's a 15-20 min drive in typical winter conditions.
Drawback to Rose: high winds will shut it down. They do a pretty good job keeping it open though. It also almost never rains there in winter.
