Saddest part of Steep is when Doug is skiing into LaGrave with his young child in his pack. RIP

I never skied with Doug C. But sorta knew him from skiing on Snow King with kids in a backpack.

We'd both be out skiing with our kids in backpacks. I had been to one of his killer yard sales and had (still have) one of his Steep Skiing jackets in yellow and red. Definitely still one of my most prized possessions

One day a guy was dressing me out at the bottom of the lift because skiing with a child in a backpack was "irresponsible" and 'bad parenting". Doug skied by slowly with his son in a backpack and shot me a great WTF! look.

I remember it to this day.

The time you won your town the race
    We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.

To-day, the road all runners come,
    Shoulder-high we brought you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
    Townsman of a stiller town.

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.

Eyes the shady night had shut
    Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears.

Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honors out,
    Runners whom reown outran
And the name died before the man.

So set, before it echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
    The still-defended challenge-cup.

    And round theat early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengtless dead,
And find to unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl's.

Lived in JH Doug's last season when he was banned. He was my hero. I remember trailing him down off AV one time marveling at his balance, stance, and way he skied. Just super in control, fluid, and fast. I still have the poster on the wall our Mammoth shredcondo that K2 released in his honor. RIP Legend.
