All in all it was a fun day of skiing at Rose. Crowds were light all day and the snow softened as the sun moved across the hill. Got a few good runs off of Hanks/Manzanita bowl. The traverse back into the ski area remains easy as the manzanita fields are still covered, allowing for an extra couple turns before making the hard left turn. The Chutes were a bit hit and miss. El Cap gate never opened most likely due to potential slide for life conditions. Lower chutes were just ok. Good for a couple turns, then not so good. Lots of "Pink" on the hill for the cancer awareness. Got into the bar in time to see Gonzaga hang on for the win. Got close there at the end.

Got a question that I'm sure many of the group can answer for me. Looking from the top of the ski area today North across Mt Rose HWY for the first time this season snowmobile tracks wee clearly visible on the North side of MR HWY. Is this area open for snow mobile access? Just curious as I've seen tons of ski track out that way all year, but until today, no snow mobile tracks.
Forgive the shitty iphone pic. I circled the most obvious high mark I could see in the pic.

P.S. I don't own a sled and I don't really do any back country so I'm not looking to get anybody fired up, just for my own knowledge.
    Thanks.

Kirkwood kinda meh today. It did soften up but the Evil E did a number on the mountain. Watched a poor girl slide for life down Sentinel bowl which was firm and icy AF (she was okay).

My kids still had a blast though, sunny spring day you can't go that wrong.. 2 weekends left!

MAKE TAHOE DEEP AGAIN ~ 2016/17 OFISHUL SNOW/FOOD/WHINE & STOKE THREAD

Pretty fun watching mildbill get the claim for biggest dude on the Gunny 25 yesterday, even Plake's dad gave him props. Awful bulletproof conditions on that face from 10-1p; can't imagine how he, SuPu, mogul54 and anyone else skied that face so many times before it softened up.

Also, my car is soooo quiet now. Who knew that pulling off the studs would be such a game changer? Does that mean it's gonna dump now??? :fm

Yeah, definitely "Wilderness" designation there and surrounding area so yes anything mechanized not allowed. Rare to see any tracks there as they would access from top of the high meadow and traverse along the edge of the meadow down that far as it would normally be too boney and lots of Aspen stands.

It seemed like they money closed a Alpine about 2 weeks earlier than ideal. Forced skier traffic to Squaw. I still had a great spring last year but this operational behavior is discouraging.

They could do something interesting and progressive by opening alpine to uphill traffic from say 7-11 am. Interesting! Still keeps costs lower but provides some options and opportunities for skier expansion.

At least y'all have something open to ski. KW is closing in two weeks and has a shit ton of snow. And my 5 yr old don't skin (yet). Looks like Squaw alpine will get some money from us this year.

Glad to hear the snow is plentiful at Kirkwood. Driving one of my kids down this week for the North American junior free ski champs and looking forward to checking out the resort for the first time

The way the snowpack set up, with so many precipitation events having a high snow line, the runouts at the bottom of the hill were really iffy. They might have been able to farm enough snow from Kangaroo to keep Summit spinning for another weekend or even two, but it's probably hard to rationalize that when you can whisk people to 8200' next door. Also, I think part of the issue may have been an unexpected late season management personnel event.

We'll see what happens this year. Already, I think ABC has run as many days this season as it has since the merger, so that bodes well.

Not sure why you think a morning uphill opening would make financial sense?
    not counting days 2016-17

They could also just not hassle uphillers post-closure. As it was prior to 2012-2013 or so.

Try "medicinal" and get up and go early. It's fun and you get to be done early.

Northstar got really sticky really fast on Saturday. Still stayed on the hill until about 2:30 or 3.
Kirkwood was much better on Sunday. Spent all morning on the backside and the usual spots near the bottom were slow, but most of the snow was pretty great.
Went to the frontside around 2pm and it was even better, stayed almost until last chair even though we had planned on bailing earlier.

Last time I was at KW was in mid-late February, so there haven't been a ton of big storms since then, but it's AMAZING how much more filled in things are. Obviously there were amazing amounts of snow in Feb, but I didn't expect it to be so much more impressive now. For example, that area under chair 4 where people always drop off the rock, the whole runout is just one smooth area, no obstacle marker, no chop.

^ Hollywood cliff. It is still roped off so people don't go careening over it but yeah, just a rollover now.

The mountain is buried. I've never seen the cliffs off 11 under Norms disappear before but they've been gone since late Feb.
