With this heavier snow coming down the avy danger is only going to get worse - be safe out there (duh).

Went to Alpine around noon right after Summit and Scott chairs popped. Snow was nice but considerably wetter than yesterday's blower, and couldn't see jack shit (had one of those moments after unloading from summit where we legit couldn't tell where the sky ended and the ground began). I did manage to kick off a small slow-moving release near some rocks over beyond Sun Spot. Nothing scary but enough to get your attention.

Pardon this completely uninteresting post....I happened to leave my almost new poles at the crosswalk by Timber Creek this afternoon (rushing to jump into my ride after a palisades lap). I know...complete dummy move.My stupidity aside I suppose their is the very low percentage chance someone who follows this saw them and would be kind enough to help me out. They are black and red Black Diamond Razors. Obviously a long shot and sorry to all of you guys who read this and wasted 10 seconds of your life.

Anyway, nothing remotely surprising here. Say away from the steeper stuff!

I fear someone is going to die in an Hourglass slide soon. Folks ski it in pretty much all conditions these days. Kind of a false-negative feedback loop.

I thought about getting in a quick solo tour in mellow terrain before work but decided the risk (particularly while solo) wasn't worth it.
There bused to be a pic floating around out there that showed hourglass ripped to the ground, edge to edge, with a 4-5 foot crown. I can't find it anywhere anymore. I believe it was taken from 431.

Check with lost and found. But I left a pair there on closing day two years ago and contacted lost and found within hours. Somehow they were never found but some employee ended up with nice black diamond poles.

KW was excellent today. Skied 8 laps off the top. Four in the morning, two at lunch and two late in the day. Had no problem finding fresh snow to turn in. Better yet, the landings were all plush. Kodak might be in after this run.

Hit Sierra today, I haven't ridden snow this light in a while! Felt way deeper than the reported 24hr 16" too. Coverage is still pretty thin in a lot of areas, I scraped a ton of rocks and shrubs, but that should change pretty quick. While deep in the trees (which was stupid since I was solo) I hit a hidden rock that pitched me head first into the snow. Nothing happened, but had I landed in one of the numerous tree wells just a few feet away I would have been donezo. Plenty of hazards out there without even mentioning the increasing avy danger. As many have said already stay safe out there and get some epic pow turns in the coming week y'all!!

You're probably thinking of this one.

Although this was taken almost two weeks later. I remember it was right around new years.

That happened overnight. No one involved.

I've got another one taken the morning of from the lift at mt rose. I think I've got it saved somewhere. It was way gnarlier looking before it got snowed on.

Yeah. not this one, it was showing more bare ground. Awesome pic, this one looks gnarly too. Looks like a sympathetic release in the foreground.

Snow turned to rain early this morning at 6000 ft. Back to light snow at the moment.

alpine closed for the day. wtf.

only silver lining on that graph is the wide std dev. maybe we'll get lucky and experience some 80's temps again soon.

Serious mashed potatoes and high avy danger with worsening conditions through the day, you're not going to be missing much anyway. Not at all surprised Alpine is closed... I'm more surprised that Squaw still has Red Dog / SC on the schedule. I wouldn't recommend dropping into Poulsen's gully today...

EDIT: And those lower Squaw lifts are now on Patrol Hold.

This could turn into one of those days when the only thing open at Squaw are the magic carpets--so parents can send the kids out in miserable weather while they sit in the bar. (See my post about what a tough job teaching little kids is.)

Why am I looking at a side bar ad of some guy getting his ass branded?

I bet we hit the Extreme! rating on Sunday.

I wonder if we get one of these on Monday ...

Squaws now claiming a late opening of all lifts. Glad I decided not to get to worked up this morning.

One of the reasons I'm never really keen to buy a Squaw pass now.

Let me translate that for you: please show up to the village and order food / drinks and maybe we'll open some lifts at some point, except not really. But thanks for spending a few bucks before we officially shut down operations for the day in a few hours.

Loaded truck and dog to Squaw. Turned around at gold ranch due to lower back pain (I tweaked it yesterday). Turned out to be a blessing.

My 18 yo is driving up 50 today to stay at a place on SLT. It's his first real snow driving. Just read the winter storm warning. They make it sound like the apocalypse up there. Should I tell him he can't go? I was figuring the the kid needs to learn how to deal with driving in the snow sooner or later and I think I've taught him well, but not if it's crazy whiteout conditions. Now I'm a worried dad.
