My bad, firewall blocked the photo. I made a mistake going to Heavenly yesterday. Those conditions look much better at the Wood.

FYI it appears that Heavenly is enforcing its uphill policy this season. No more workout laps.

Congrats to Cinderz on scoring a new Fischer set up. I even saw her on the face-book.

KW is short, but plenty of fun. The snow.

Other than KT Squaw is pretty short as well. Sure, you can ski from the top of Emigrant to the base, but that would be a pretty boring run.

The Sierras are short. Just not much sustained vert.

Continuous vertical is one of the most overrated things in skiing if you ask me. Give me 1500 feet of sweet terrain that you can hot-lap (KT-22, Headwall, Granite at Squaw - the Wall at KW, Summit at Alpine Meadows, chair 23 at Mammoth) over a 3-4k tram ride where you have to click out and spend like 30 minutes or longer without skiing. At Snowbird I'd much rather lap Gad 2 or Mineral basin than do tram laps. At Jackson I'd rather lap Sublette or Thunder than do tram laps (unless the Hobacks are going off).

Friday - Sunday are shaping up nicely. Best resort day of the season (so far) potential now that more terrain is open.

Any guesses as to where (in the snowpack) this came from?

Depth hoar bonding? They don't look loose to me..but perhaps someone who's seen more of this should confirm..

There's vert and then there's vert. I can easily ski the 2700 feet from the top of Sibo to the base of Squaw, but it's been a couple of years since I could manage the 1600 of West Face of KT without stopping. And vert is meaningless unless it's actual skied. When I've been to WB the only time I went anywhere near the bottom was at the end of the day. I guess there's peak to creek if you're into long groomers. I've never done it. The main complaint about Spanky's is the long runout. The main advantage of big vertical is that there's a better chance of decent snow and/or acceptable weather somewhere on the mountain. Like Squaw where you have KT on storm days (top is only 7800) and the upper mountain when things are manky below.

Do you thing we should believe in the NOAA winter storm warning? Opensnow says the storm may split and we may get much less, hopefully he is wrong as usual.

That is the weak layer at the bottom of our snowpack. NE facing at around 8,900ft near Carson Pass.

About 15cm of old facets that look to be (to my untrained eye) in the process of rounding/bonding. Still very loose, with a hard crust on top.

    Any snow-dorks have input?

Not sure about these Sierras that you speak of, but The Sierra has many mountains with big sustained vert. They just happen to be in the other 99% of the range that doesn't have ski areas.

That's where all the down to earth people ski.

The uptights ski the Sierra_, the Rocky_, the Applachia_, the White_, the Cascade_, The Bighorn_ and the Teton_ because that's far more majestic sounding when whispered over a raised pinky.

Powdork and I get together once a year and have a knife fight over it. Because this shit is fo real. It's taking such a toll on me personally, I'm headed off to the Wasatches for a vacation.

One of my best days at snowbird was an afternoon lapping Peruvian during a storm. The laps were insanely good.

Did a quick lap this morning out at Rose b.c. with the dog to test out a new rig and holy cow I couldn't believe how hammered it was. Out of curiosity, does anyone know the snowmobile boudaries for the southern edge near the highway? Because there were snowmachine tracks EVERYWHERE. Right out of the main snowmobile put in lot there are signs posted all over for "no snowmobiles past this point" yet I saw tracks in a lot of suspect areas that I'm not sure are legit are not. I made a little map. The red areas were hammered with snowmachine tracks throughout.

Anytime they say a foot at lake level you can expect it to under perform.

Yeah, 5-7000 foot runs just don't give me the leg burn I'm looking for. If you're talking about ski resorts then lol....who cares? The fingers/chimney sweep are only about 200 vert. Those are pretty boring runs.

There not supposed to be on that side. They have a route up from the parking area to the Relay Road.

"Most used" and "open to sleds" aren't the same thing. You should do some exploring.

There's a line of signs in the trees about where his bottom line is. Sledders need to know these things, skiers don't. Sounds like you don't. If he's saying there are tracks literally right behind a closure sign, that's a different issue and some dumbass needs a dope slap. But his map has all but maybe one of his lines in the small area open to sleds up there.

BG, that's all open. Your bottom line is about where the boundary is, maybe a little behind it. The fun thing is that you can go further left, further right, further north, or cross the street to the south and it's not an issue. In 'normal' snow years not a lot of people ride those zones but lately..........yeah, that.
