Has anyone been out to Echo Lakes recently? I'm wondering if the lakes are supportable to cross or if they are beginning to open up and I should wait to go goof off in that area with kayak access...

We have just decided to bail on Squaw this weekend because of the weather forecast.
Heard it was closed today for Lightning?
Please post up how awful it is so we don't feel like we messed up.

So...we are planning on heading up next weekend now, instead of going to the Mammoth Mini (much easier drive - sorry Splat)
Anyone other Maggots planning to be there?
Shall we like make a "thing" of it?

I'll be there next weekend for sure. Wanted to head down to Mammoth but with a new pad up in Truckee I've got a bunch of shit to get done before the summer and family, etc. There's also a big review of the Squaw village proposal on Saturday at 3pm at the PJ convention room if anyone wants to show up and tell them they're a bunch of assholes.

Two people got struck by lightning yesterday on the west shore so they're definitely not joking around with that closure.

closed again today... Raza is ok after the lightening strike and I heard the other person is as well
the lightening strike launched him almost 20 feet in the air, his injuries are mostly bruises and cuts from the fall

Don't fuck with lightening. We were sitting having lunch on a nice sunny summit on Pinnacle Ridge in the Winds after a couple of class 5 pitches we belayed and protected. When our metal started buzzing we turned around and saw a huge thunder head. Didn't bother to rope up on the downclimb--same route we belayed up.
On a plane we were talking to a helicopter company owner who used to do long line evacs in Grand Teton. I asked him if he had done the rescue where a bunch of people on the Exum Ridge had been zapped--I had read about in Outside. His answer--"Which year are you talking about?"
Friend of mine was hit on top of Half Dome--knocked down, not hurt.

4-6 inches on CP today. Was on a time frame so the idea was to do a couple on E Back but as I got to the bottom of the pass it was 100% socked in. Ended up doing two laps in the main GX gully. Fairly wet and heavy as expected but as it wasn't all that deep it was ok. Skied pretty as long as you carried some speed. Coverage was just fine save the bottom 50 feet to the highway even on this solar aspect. Clouds just starting to peel off the south side of the pass as I left at 12:45ish.

yesterday was mostly cloudy... been raining since about 8 oclock last night... being closed yesterday and open today is really poor management

Thanks. I decided to sleep in and not hope for a soggy (but snowy) dawn patrol: seemed too optimistic. In sprinkling truckee now, running errands and eating second breakfast at Jaliscos (YUM!). Damn warm storm!

it was raining to the top at squaw all day, snowed a small amount early morning. Not raining the entire day but it was misty when it wasn't then started clearing out later in the afternoon.

weather yesterday was much nicer but it was closed.. thunderstorms early AM but cleared out after they made the call.

there's a possibility of t-storms tomorrow, wouldn't be surprised if it closes then. today was the only day where it was just moisture and no thunder. if it closes tomorrow today was possibly the last day of KT?

From the Squaw web site: Alpine Meadows closed to uphill traffic May 9-23 for forestry work. (I assume that means cutting trees). Which I figure means it's open after that? (But why anyone would want to skin at a closed resort rather than the backcountry is beyond me.)

^because a closed resort is backcountry. also it's hard to beat the access and egress. resorts tend to be on north facing venues. there's lots of reasons.

And hitting your favorite lines, one at a time, either in early season low tide makes everything gnar or after closing, everything is fat, cause KW closes with a 12' base, and no gapers down below balls to walls easy access and back for lunch skiing.
