We used to cut wood for my grandparents each year, usually about 10-12 cords. My uncle Don was always looking for ways to do things more easily and one year he welded a splitting wedge to the bucket of his backhoe as an improvised splitter. Anyway my uncle Bob and I laughed at Don and my other uncle Gene while we split a couple of cords with splitting mauls in the same time it took them to split several rounds. He eventually bought a real spitter and that was nice.

Splitters are great but there is something very satisfying about wading through a cord of wood with a splitting maul.

I was thinking the same thing. All those rounds are nice, clear, and straight grained. Seems like whenever we go camping and need to split up some wood for the camp fire all we can find are trees with rings of branches (and thus lots of knots) every foot or so.
