Decent, as in the bumps looked like great snow and decent coverage like when I grew up skiing upstate ny. Marginal for jan one here, but better than MTb. Tho, I'd rather be in the ocean right now. Zachs skis very nicely off the morning bell

I skied KW and Heavenly last two days of 2013. Quick report:

Kwood is fun, but limited terrain wise (3 hours and bored), still some off piste to tackle (none @ Heavenly). Rock skis are a good idea. Bumpy. Turn and burn. Terrain park is rails and boxes.

Heavenly has Cali-NV connected. Avoid tram. Piste and funnels of people in places. Terrain park under Tamarack is open, only one on the mountain iirc. Slightly bumpy.

Come on you bunch of whiners, within 2 weeks a series of storms will come through and slowly knock down that high pressure ridge over the pacific and open the door, if you lived in Cali long enough you've seen over and over.

I've been skiing here since '93 and I've never seen 3 years this bad. Driest year on record for CA. And the GFS shows those storms your talking about to be weak as shit and mostly missing us to the north with high pressure coming back right behind them. We'll get snow but this will still be the worst winter ever.

It is and it gets full sun after 11am all winter. Much warmer than dinosaur rock.

Is this something you observed? Or was told? I have not even bothered mounting my new planks. Too much terracing work going on during this dry winter.

Guy tells me te snow will come. In a typical year, the surf tends to come up and pump for a month, then we get real snow. We've had waves for two weeks plus now. So it should not be long from now that we get snow. Now that is scientific and stuff.

Headed back out to get another 5k or so. Not bored, but it helps that my kid is killing it.

On the plus side, this is still a better start to winter than two years ago when the best option for winter entertainment at new years was ice skating on Tenaya lake...

Slaloms getting a ton of use. These years are allowing me to teach my young kids, so I'm dealing with it.

Had fun with the fam at KW today. I spent most of the day with my 2 year old but got one lap down Chamoix off of 6. Nice 6 foot air out into a sketchy zone to shun speed but all in good fun. The snow all the way to the Top of 7 was winter chalk although with a few hollow patches due to lack of skier traffic. Other than that, a pretty mellow day...quit early and my older son did the snowmobile course near Tower Bar.

Disney wasn't running when I skinned Judah on Monday. At least, it didn't look like the chair was moving at all and I couldn't see any skier traffic. Looked thin as shit and the groomer looker's right of the chair off the saddle between Disney and Crow's Nest looked like it had a bunch of random rocks sticking out. Judah wasn't running either. Jerome and Lincoln were. That said, it certainly looked skiable--just be careful.

I'm going to hit Judah again early tomorrow before heading back down the hill.

Snow depth and quality varied from bare sand (even on north-ish facing slopes--probably NE) to ~2 feet of wintery stuff to inch-thick crust over facets over rock. Like this:

Sonoma County’s Rock Ice & Mountain Club welcomes Todd Offenbacher and the Tahoe Adventure Film Festival Road Tour on January 10, 2014 at the Mystic Theater in Petaluma.

PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA – The Rock Ice & Mountain Club is pleased to host the Tahoe Adventure Film Festival at the historic Mystic Theatre. Designed to capture the intensity and passion of adventure, the Tahoe Adventure Film Festival is a perfect summary of California’s outdoor culture. The festival’s eight short films will showcase segments from the best skiing, rock climbing, skate boarding, surfing, cycling, snow boarding, and BASE jumping films of the year.

The show begins the minute the doors open at 6:30 p.m. Dramatic action photos by Tahoe’s Keoki Flagg from, Tahoe, Antarctica, and Alaska flashes on the big screen while music pumps up the crowd. The main event begins at 7:30 p.m. Many of the segments are special edits including previews of films that have not been released. During intermission and after the event we’ll be giving away gear and prizes from our sponsors. The party continues after the event at neighboring McNears Saloon.

Inspired by the Woodstock era, the full length film quickly grew into a 60 page script complete with dialogue, characters, sets, lighting, and a costume department—It is a entertaining change from the typical action sports mold. Based in Nelson, BC, It is the tale of one man's search to rediscover the freedom of his youth. This film goes beyond action sports— Valhalla’s has a totally unique style, and structure, and is a new spin on the modern ski film.

British climber Hazel Findlay is the first woman to climb the British grade of E9 (super hard, super sketchy), Hazel is a connoisseur and master of loose rock, dodgy gear, and big runouts.

this is a film we created for the TAFF. This is not a film you will see on line or at any other film festival. It was shot by Tahoe local Tom Day (mostly for WME), and edited by another Tahoe local Dane Henry of Deep Roots Media- we wanted to feature one of the exceptional Tahoe personalities in our Tribe- Doug Stoup. I have now worked on 3 polar ski mountaineering expeditions with Doug in the past 2 years. He is one of the most amazing people I have ever met, and this year’s Golden Camalot recipient.

Apparently people don't ski vail on holidays, yesterday was a ghost town with knee deep snow until the back bowls closed.

Really? Out of the various resorts we've skied this past couple of weeks, we thought SV had the worst "snow" quality (went yesterday).
All I can say is Thank Goddess for Snow King!
Decent groomers off Squaw Creek, but crowded!
Some spice in the bumps under Red Dog lift (Dogleg?). Soft, heavy "pow" on top. But the groomer next door was giving folks trouble (icy).
Also a bit of spice near to Far East lift offload, where there is an S bend in the groomer.

I dunno. I had fun at KW today...

Easy to do.
Enjoyed ourselves on Sunday (Olympic, LookOutJaneck bumps & chutes, "ski-touring" as ShadyLady called it) and we'll be there again on Saturday!
