This really doesn't look good. What are the odds of getting 1927 scale events in back to back years?
By the sounds of things this would acually be very similar to the 1927 flood.

    http://www.erh.noaa.gov/btv/events/27flood.shtml

    Overview

Rainfall during the month of October averaged about 150 percent of normal across the state. In northern and central sections, some stations received 200-300 percent of normal. Heavy rainfall periods during the month were separated enough so flooding did not occur. Instead, the rain caused the soil to become saturated. Combined with the lateness of the year and the fact that most vegetation was either dead or dying, any futher rainfall would runoff directly into the rivers. This is exactly the scenario that lead to Vermont's greatest disaster.

Rain began on the evening of November 2, as a cold front moved into the area from the west. Rainfall continued through the night with light amounts being recorded by the morning of the 3rd. Rainfall intensity increased during the morning of the 3rd as a low pressure center moved up along the Northeast coast. This low had tropical moisture associated with it. As the low moved up the coast, a strong southeast flow developed. This mositure-laden air was forced to rise as it encountered the Green Mountains, resulting in torrential downpours along and east of the Green Mountains. Rainfall amounts at the Weather Bureau station in Northfield totaled 1.65 inches from 4:00 am to 11:00 am on the 3rd, with 4.24 inches falling from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. The total from late evening of the 2nd to late morning on the 4th was 8.71 inches.

FYI for anyone who wants to keep track of the storm by "staying local" and inside the ECRC family, LH is also posting about it on FIS fb:

Every model but one has Sandy heading far out to sea. I suppose the effects could still be felt as bands of rain swing in from the ocean.

Also, I know much of the rebuilding involved oversizing the culverts, etc., so I am hoping that there will not be the same level of destruction as last August. Although, it was alarming to see the volume of water in the streams, rivers, etc. just last weekend after only a couple inches of rain. I guess with the saturated ground, the water has no where to go, but flow on the surface.

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Two of the major models now have it hitting the east coast. GFS and the ECMWF (aka the euro).
Currently, the Euro has the storm hugging the coast and landfalling in NJ.
The latest GFS run at noon has the storm initially heading out to sea but hitting the blocking high pressue in the North Atlantic and forcing it to retrograde into the Gulf of Maine and into interior New England.
These are two of the most reliable long range models, especially when the systems are going to be as defined as they are.

Just hit the play button to see the GFS in action (you can also switch to the ECMWF):

Anybody heading south from the greater Magic area that wouldn't mind picking up my chainsaw and meeting me somewhere with it?

If that sounds doable to you, shoot me a PM please and thank you.

These guys are local. I like LH he is funny and great at predicting weather, its tragic that he is associated with such a whiny self entitled grundle gripper as you. But because you said we should all follow one weather source I guess thats the way it should be

Its surprising and contradictory coming from a professor of math.

By "staying local" I meant staying in the ECRC collectiveb (hence the quotes). Sorry if that wasn't clear. Are the NEWWorks guys in here too? If so, sorry. I just didn't know. Also, I definitely don't mean to imply anyone needs to stick to one source. But if they want to keep up with LH, thought I'd point them to where he's been posting.

EDIT to add some hiking stoke to nix the bad juju I guess I brought in the RC here:

we hiked a loop that I've heard called the "romp of the wampahoofii" on Mt. Mansfield a few days ago which links several trails in a way that resembles the migratory patterns of the now extinct Wampahoofus. It was a hike that was pretty easy on the eyes (as long as they were looking through wide angle lenses)...

I really think the cave looks like the outline of the state of VT in this one. thought that was neat

pretty damn tight at times!! (reminds me of navigating some UT slot canyons in places)

Now let's hope for some snow (and NOT a destruction of the interior northeast by an extra-tropical storm)!!

Hahaha. This hit the spot. Not sure what was funnier this or the fact that gp didn't dispute the claim. gp you are maturing that is good. Now work on the "self entitled grundle gripper" part - I might have to look that one up. Still love your pics and stoke.

LH certainly a huge fan and always rely on your forecast. All this weather talk is making me stoked but I do hope folks are spared the devastation. Hang in there NE looks like this one is a whopper.

Cold enough for snow on George?

Amazing change of models in 24 hrs. Totally different scenario now and not very pretty.

Bahahahahaha I just lost it so hard...

I'd be down for a GP->LH trade! I mean, I miss his weather predictions so damn much, and I've been conditioned by Petrics' PMs to never, ever - for any reason- follow one of his links. It's a shame really. I miss Lionel. I miss his musk. I miss his lols. LIONEL COME BACK TO US!

in other news, y'all doing the hating are way out of line. end of story. get over yourselves
