A couple times a month, I deliver meals to seniors thru the county Meals on Wheels program. It can be hard, but really rewarding...
This is the worst pain EVER!

    Very cool.

I found this site http://www.volunteermatch.org/ over the weekend, and there are a lot of opportunities to get involved in some way or another. I have a hard time scheduling things during the week as I never know if there are additional nails I'm gonna need to pound, so being able to search for things on the weekend is a nice plus.

^^ It doesn't matter what you do, so long as you do something. It only takes a little bit from each of us that can do to make a difference.

I used to be a volunteer ski & soccer coach but my kids moved on from those sports so i did too. I'm also a volunteer fire fighter, EMS first responder and member of search and rescue rope rescue team.

Hauled a 450lb guy out of a ravine on Sunday, he was out quadding in shorts & t shirt on Saturday night and failed to make a corner, he spent the night with a broken femur & arm about 150' off the road.
    You are what you eat.

I've volunteered for the boy scouts for 23 of the last 25 years. It can be a great experience, particularly in a troop that serves low-income kids that typically don't have the opportunities to do much outdoor stuff.

TRY to voly for something YOU like to do

I volunteered at the YMCA to guide newbie mtn bikers, we are talking about people who get excited riding on a flat dirt track wide/flat enough to drive a prius thru the bush ... getting them onto single track was way off the charts

the good thing for the newbies was they could try something wild that we take for granted, for the 1$ participant fee newbies came under the YMCA's umbrella insurance policy sure, it was lame mtn biking but it was fun & rewarding to see them have fun and push their limits, most memorable was guiding a physicaly together but mentally challenged teen who was stuck at a 10yr old level livivng with his grandma so he never got to go crazy except for the one time he is the only person to show up and so I took him real mtn biking so there was blood ... he liked it!

    and being a Y volenteer I got a free Y membership so I tried to be a good person ... & saved 400$ for a years memebership

That's awesome your "pup" is a therapy dog, SFB. They must be amazed when he walks in! Gentle Giant!

Otis is, too... We belong to Pets & People Foundation, Inc. There was no fee, just had to pass a fairly serious test. They cover insurance and registration, etc. (It's only been a year, but they seem like a very good organization, if anyone is thinking of doing it.)

I visit an assisted care facility once a week (with my 13yo daughter) and am just starting to work with people affected with downs syndrome. It doesn't take much time, and it's very rewarding. It brings a lot of smiles to those who otherwise may not have a very exciting day. Not to mention, it reminds me how lucky we are and it makes us feel more a part of the community.

A little "home therapy"... he lets my daughter play twister with him:

more therapy dog stoke and to git er back on track
The guy in the back was hit by a car but fits along just fine at shriners hospital whre there are plenty of kids with various metal devices aiding them. I liked going to shriners w/ the dog everyone is pretty happy. Cool staff, the kids are getting operated on and fixed up, the parents arent really stressing over the bills, the place is volunteer central and the kid who can are finger paintin etc.
It stokes me out when young kids know about Lewis and Clark even if the didnt know they were accompained by a big old slobery newf on their, I think epic fits, journey.
There is this one little girl that has been there 3 times for surgery in the 9 or so years ive been going that keeps a journal/scrapbook and has pictures of me and my now gone dogs in it, shit I even had hair and a hippie ponytail back then.
Plenty of perro grande besares are doled out and its cool to see kids that are fearful of bigdogs get to pet or aproach them at there level or pace.
Sadly as bd4a and others have mentioned it can get political/buerocrapic.
I quit goin this winter lot of skiin and the hospitals way downtown in shitty traffic.
Now it seems i need to go get retested for TB and they dont do it there and if Id a gone one or two times this winter I wouldnt have to.
add it to the list of shit I need to do as soon as I get done bumpin good threads w/ my blogz

Haha, just went to that site. It's exactly what I'm talking about, but I was joking. That is what the movie is about, pretty funny actually.

that took like 1/2 hour and the memories of explaining the rainbow bridge to a young girl who loves dogs but for whatever reason doesnt have one makes me cry as does the realization that it may just be a bit more than a smile on a face or a free meal delivered to a old guy/gal

There's a guy in Long Beach who organized a once-monthly, 30 minute beach clean-up. It's been hugely successful. He gets local businesses to donate goods that he raffles off after tue clean-up, but frankly I think people would just show up and do it anyway at this point. My kids like he clean-up so well they actually get upset when the 30 minutes is up. That's the idea though - make it a habit to always be picking up that trash that someone else dropped and results will follow. PADI holds a similar, once-yearly dive clean-up.

Finally found something to sink my teeth in to. A few friends have enjoyed doing it in the past, and after reading the suggestion here that you should volunteer doing something you enjoy I applied with SOS for their snowboard outreach program. I am looking forward to exposing underprivileged youth to the immense joy of sliding down snow on plastic and wood. Should be a good time.
