    Quiksilver Pro NYC

Hugh hates on me whenever I post my recent edits. But that's OK. I think this one will create some fun NYC surfing conversations. Are the NYC mags excited to check out this event? It's also going to be where they'll be premiering "The Art Of Flight"

Damn, "the dream tour" has so many dreamy locations this year. Long Island, Trestles, Ocean Beach, shitty Rio, hop must have beat himself dry.

    Good thing G-land isn't dreamy

I'm trying but there's always more.

As for the tour this year I'm sure you read the Surfer mag article (I know how much you love to read that magazine) that explained how 80% of the surfers on the tour were excited about the events. At any rate, Blasphemy Rottmouth won't have to drive very far to get to OB.

Why did they leave NYC to show there is surf in NYC? Rockaway, Queens has better surf than Long Beach.

    More money in the burbs.

Or if you ask hop and hotdookie, the best surf is there. it's the dream tour. everyone's stoked to surf there.

I know I dream of Ocean Beach. The closeouts. The trannies. The tweakers. It's like mount baker.

It's funny you're so hung up on something I posted years (?) ago about the WCT tour when it actually was a dream tour. I haven't said anything recently about it - in fact I had no idea that the tour was going to NYC until I saw this thread. Coincidentally I read the magazine in question the very same day while spending your money.

Oh well. I suppose it goes both ways; I still remember when your signature was something like "This space reserved for the burn that shows I'm a fucking moron" and all I could think about was when you posted your email address on the forum in one of my threads. Remember this? Don't go whining to moderators like you did last time; you're the moron that posted it.

I like how you spent days before erasing all of (well, mostly your current) email from the forums before "outing" me like a little bitch.

Honestly, sometimes i get more entertained by mediocre waves where people have to make do with whatever they can get. Kind of getting tired of the Slater, Fanning, Parko perfect score heats. Basically, I'm just stoked because I have a feeling Dane will be in that event and if anyone can preform in small shitty waves, it's him.
either way, who can argue with a huge ass party in NYC?

Those waves look better than all of the waves I've surfed in the past year, but I'm no Hugh Conway.

There's a funny conversation when Slater was on The Chelsea Lately show. (hugh is going to hate on that linking to the Quiksilver blog)
Slater: "We'll get good waves if there's a hurricane!"
Chelsea: "Well, that's something good to home for."

Its pretty cool that these companies are going to do some large scale events in America. Not just for their own profit, but I think that it'll keep that money in the US instead of throwing it into random economies like Puerto Rico or Indonesia. Maybe they should just change the name to "The American Dream Tour"

Hopefully Hugh can come up with a new variation on his trademark "marketing/corporate stooge" zinger in response to that.

Right, Puerto Rico is technically the US. But the local economy benefits from it more than a US state would. I think you get my point.
Whatever, I don't know shit about Puerto Rico.

I don't get your point. Are you saying the economy in Buffalo or Ithaca or anywhere else in NY will benefit from the comp held on Long Island, or is it just that the money's staying in a state vs. a territory?

~$7 million (or whatever the estimate is for it that's the neighborhood for the Puerto Rico event and the triple crown is ~$20 million for all 3) is $7 million these days and nothing to sneeze at. Events come and go and unless someone stumps up $$$ this will probably go like most of the other US events. Atlantic City, Ocean City, New Syrna, Myrtle Beach, OBX, Santa Cruz all had top level events that passed some sooner than others. For a couple years Pipe was the only event in the US - it, a couple Aussie events, France and Brasil have been the backbone. Japan came and mostly went, Spain/Portugal came, went, came back. Being near a reasonably large population center interested in buying surf crap seems to be the biggest determinate of longterm success so who knows, maybe there's a future on Long Island.

Surfing sells a dream. The current tour isn't a dream - Ocean Beach is cool in the context of the Search (OB, Isabella, Peniche, Padang Padang/Uluwatu, Arica, Huatulco, Reunion (which was on the tour for a bunch of years)) but it ain't dreamy and neither are many of the others. The demands have gotten to big for at least one quality break (Gnaraloo) so who knows where else is open for them to go these days though. Norway? Some surf farm in Dubai? As cool as it is to watch great surfers live/streaming video not sure how interesting that product is for the masses.

That's nice and all, but I'm not sure if that's what HotTate meant when he said "But the local economy (of US territory Puerto Rico) benefits from it more than a US state would"?

Dude, forget Puerto Rico, it not my point at all.
Having a large scale event in NY would do more things like, create jobs/money for vendors that doesn't normally exist. (i.e. concerts, parties, peripheral contests, movie premieres, taxi cabs, parking tickets... whatever) Seems like everyone keeps saying that Quiksilver is trying to sell boardshorts. Maybe it'll help a few more people than just Quiksilver.
Seems to me like that would help the economy more than having a handful of the surf industry post up in G-land, where the average "core" fan can only see it on the web.

$7 million isn't a large scale event in New York. Derek Jeter farts bigger. I'd thought this was about bigwig meet/greet marketing bullshit because there isn't a meaningful economic impact in new york. Want impact? Go to Maine. Or Washington.

Way more core surf fans floating around G-land/bali/nusa tengara than New York City. Core being people who actually care who the surfers are and can differentiate between them. There are more mollusk regulars in New York. Core fans can also stay and surf in G-Land/Bali for way less than NYC. More pro hos too ('cept in G-land then theres just rats, mean monkeys, and big fucking snakes)

Not that any of that matters. Who cares about surf contests?

but, surely you can recognize that the average "coastal new yorker" needs this money more than the average indo/puerto rican.

True they'll be more likely to buy an authentic Quikshitter t-shirt for $30.

Indo's buy the fakes for <$1
