All the info on the stuff for free, some of the houses sound like they could be quite the party.
yeah dude the houses are the best party especially on nights that the team is playing or has won gold...

Just about every country in the world gets the live feed, my Aussie GF confirms her family down unda gets it live even if it's the middle of the fucking night down there. Conan was right about everything he said about the morons who run that network. God I hope ESPN outbids NBC for future games.
i switched from CTV to NBC to check on the coverage after watching 2 hours and NBC still was an hour out of showing it on the west coast.

I think I remember they did they same at Salt Lake City - I remember calling my folks after the opening ceremony and they were just starting to watch it on NBC. Might not have been SLC, but it was a recent Olympics.

After watching every winter games since 92' via Canadian coverage - I wouldn't watch the games if I had to sit through the NBC non-sporting coverage of the games. It has always sucked - NBC is just the most current suckage.

I agree. I did not go out of my way to look for the footage on the web. Sitting their with my family, and see it on NBC. Wow, that is not cool. I man died, we do NOT need to see him hitting that steel beam. Jesus...

There is the eagle rule that you must pass. Eddie The Eagle was pretty much just an awesome dude who thought it would kick ass to be an Olympian for Great Britain in the ski jump. He borrowed equipment and wore six pairs of socks to fit in the boots. He finished last.

Now you have to place in an international competition to qualify for the Olympics. Cool runnings? never again said the assholes in charge.

(I wasn't the attending paramedic on scene, but if your back makes contact with a Steel I-beam at 140km/h I'm pretty sure it was death on contact due to your spine being severed.)

My feelings go out to his family, who last saw their son off to the Olympics to compete, make new friends and participate in a wonderful event that brings us all together and instead they're now being bombarded with footage of their son dying on prime-time TV.

This footage needs to get pulled.. I hope the networks that are playing it get reprimanded.

Also, for the competitors sake, I hope those beams get covered up by padding or netting of some sort. Every Alpine Race or Ski Cross I've raced every single chairlift pole, and snow-making pipe is fully padded and covered by A-Netting or rows of B-netting. A lot goes into ensuring that even the improbable obstacles are made safe in the unlikely event of contact being made. I hope this gets taken care of...
Agreed showing the crash at all much less in slo-mo is super tacky! Realistically though, no amount of padding is going to protect you when you hit a pole at 90mph.While I'm sure he was aware of the risks, I doubt he or many of the rest of us ever seriously consider how our last moments might actually play out.
It's ironic that immediately following 911 all the networks ran graphic footage of the jumpers, etc., and then a few months later only showed the buildings collapsing. I wonder if then as now they only find a conscience when enough people notice they don't have one?

This pisses me off to no end. Usually I watch the CBC coverage, but they don't have it this time. And to add insult to injury we just got CBC HD within the last month or so on our cable.

With Betty Fox carrying in the Olympic flag, looks like it will be Gretzky carrying lighting the cauldron. Too bad. (Terry Fox Secondary Grad here) I thought Furlong gave it away when he said that the spirit of the Olympics was never giving up. still time for me to be wrong though

That final cauldron reminds me of Superman's fortress of solitude. I was super stoked to see Romeo Dallaire carry the Olympic flag in, with Anne Murray, Bobby Orr, etc.

Wondering if there was supposed to be a 4th spire for Cartiona le May Doan to light? Also Rick Hansen was another very deserving torch carrier, stoked to see him!

I agree, but that entire section should have been covered by a wall or plexiglass or something. God that was so awful, I was trying to avoid watching it but NBC crammed it down my throat.

In other light (pun intended,) the intro with the maple leaf of red flares was pretty sick.

What? Just woke up .. opening ceremony is over ...? Why is Gretzky in a truck? Why are all these people running around..? What happened to the fat dude..? Oh hey, there's the luger again. Hitting that pole.

    Fuck it, I'm going skiing.

PS. Logistics update: if taking OBN from Whistler to WOP, it's fast & easy, plenty of buses. But getting back from WOP, they have 5 buses, and 10,000 people, and it takes HOURS to get from the Callaghan to Whistler. This is minor compared to all the other shit that went wrong today (respect to the poor luger). Anyway, good luck for those of you using the bus network.

what a night! My buddy's boss walked into my office at 4:40pm and said my buddy had to bail on his free tickets to the opening ceremonies. Umm yeah Ok I'm all over that says I. Dashed off to pick up the tix. Traffic was an absolute breeze and my niece and I were in our seats by 6:30, only half an hour late. Sweet seats too, right next to the Australian Olympic team.

The show was pretty awesome to see. Truly somethign I'll remember for the rest of my life, and the tribute to the poor Georgian luger Kumaritashvili was pretty moving. Their team got nearly as big a cheer as Canada's did when they entered the stadium.

Afterwards the entire downtown area was just packed with people, the streets teeming with jubilation all around. The vibe was just unbelievable. Wish my niece was old enough to hit the pubs, we'd have partied down for sure! Anyways, super fun times happening in Van these days. Here's a few pics:

It's OK I kind of agree with you. There were some awesome moments but the ceremony was kind of gay just like KD Lang the HE/SHE.
The speech by the fat dude with the Amish beard was amazing. I loved what he said and yes we are living in the best country in the world. Go Canada!
The graphics and light show were cool but it got boring after awhile. Canada is a tolerant country and we had to tolerate some stupid and boring shit but I wouldn't trade our silliness for anything. This is Canada and I love it !!!!!!
