Hmm.. Some good suggestions and some other..stuff.

I think the idea behind getting a home gym or other stuff is that it is fixed equipment which would become part of my daily routine like driving the car (or whatever your ignorant little maggot minds can conjur up).

I appreciate that I may or may not be ready to 'get real fitness' at this very moment, but I'm not sure it's that realistic to expect someone to go on the van damme-rocky V bodyweight/milkjug press fitness regime whilst holding a long day work schedule. If you make this work-godspeed. I got ~20 minutes a day at 5am or 8pm between breakfast and dinner.

I'm sure that 'some' have had ssome success with home equipment or is it all a big scam? Save for the C2 of course..

Aside from the lack of decent downhill skiing opportunities WI is a great place to live. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else during the fall. Come summer we've got the some of the best trout fishing in the country. I get to choose between inland trout and Great Lakes trout. Add in all the the inland lakes and public land and I'm a busy guy much of the year.

As far as home gym equipment My sister has nice smith machine with a bench, weight bar, free weights, and attachments (i.e. rope for triceps). She got it from Sam's Club. The set is actually pretty damn nice and I don't believe it was very expensive. Plenty of variety in the number and type of exercises but it isn't something you can stow in a closet or under your bed.

Inland trout AND great lakes trout? Is that like country music vs western music?

FYI, dudes in my office are discussing relative merits of various track suits right now. And I don't work in "waste management".

That's the point mitch. If you only have 20 minutes to workout that time is not well spent casually spinning on an elliptical while chatting with your GF or reading powder. A high intensity interval type workout can be done in the same or less time but will produce actual fitness gains.

mitch-i'd highly recommend going the interval type way of working out since you don't have much time or money to spend. You can do lots of stuff w/ out buying big, pricey things to help you.

After baby comes, I'm focusing the short amount of time I'll have on this type of exercise, as it's just the best way to go for the little time a lot of us have.
I've seen DTM make huge strides just by doing these short type of intense workouts, it's pretty awesome.

I have a bench, a barbell, a curl bar and dumbells. I spend from 20-40 minutes, three times a week with those. I run or cycle for cardio 2 to 3 days a week- rain or shine, I'm out there. This has worked great for me for 20 years. You don't need special equipment or a gym.

No. Different types of trout with different types of habitat and behaviors. The great lakes trout and salmon migrate up rivers like their ocean counterparts and Lake trout are not really found in inland streams though a few deeper two tier inland lakes may have a small population. Great lake trout are usually bigger in size than their inland counterparts. Hit a steehead run on Lake Michigan or Lake Superior and you'll have a blast.

I went to the gym for years. Now I have a bench (that can incline or decline), a set of dumbells and a pull-up bar at home by the TV. Goes a long way, and costs less than one year's gym pass.

How about a pair of running shoes? If you want to add in some weights get a set of dumbbells.

What makes kettle bells better than dumbbells? Well, besides that they're not 'dumb.'

Just built my climbing woodie, picked up a set of dumbbells and an incline/flat/decline bench(Ironmaster adjustable dumbbells and superbench), and now looking for a cardio-ish machine to round out my apartment workout setup.

Im on the fence, but am very very close to pulling the trigger on a concept 2 rower, I just have one issue. I hear they cause back problems even when used with decent form. Thoughts? Opinions on the matter? Looks like the perfect way to train hard for me, I just dont wanna fuck up my back.

I've been where you are - you don't have a lot of time and you don't really want to go for a run outside. I think the recs for some sort of weight workout are good - you can get a decent strength workout in 10 or 15 minutes.

For cardio, a rowing machine may be a good whole-body workout, but it requires some dedication and focus, at least in my experience. Ellipticals and treadmills allow you to zone out and watch TV and still get some exercise.

With ellipticals, however, I've never felt like the workout I was getting really translated into any other activity.

So my recommendation would be a used treadmill. The downside is, they're loud and they take a bunch of room. The plus side is, running is a pretty good workout that doesn't take a lot of willpower (just set it at 7 mph and go for 30 min.). Wireless headphones hooked up to the TV help pass the time and kill the noise.

Well, if you row a lot you are doing a TON of pulling. You should definitely balance it out with some pushing. Pushups, burpees, shoulder presses, push presses, thrusters, dips, weighted dips, etc ( http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/excercise.html is a GREAT resource for ideas and demos, has a whole section on the C2 rower).

As for Badgers post...that is the problem. Intensity is good. Do 3x500 meters on the C2 and you will be SMOKED. You should be able to row 500 in less than 1:45 with any sort of baseline fitness and rowing skill. Do three at max effort with 3 minutes rest in between, and then fall off and be amazed at the workout you just got in 14 minutes.

Or do some tabata intervals. These work with anything, air squats, burpees, pullups, pushups, situps, all out sprints, etc. The deal is you do 8 rounds of 20 seconds all out effort and then 10 seconds rest. 4 minutes, that's it. Easy, right? Try it and post.

Yep, I was searching craigslist for less than 2 days and at least 8 C2 rowing machines got bought and sold in my area in that time. Half price is great, but I would have paid full price if I hadnt gotten lucky and scored one cheaper. I need to be able to work out in the hour or less long breaks I have during school, and gym membership fees are OUT OF CONTROL here. As in, within 4 months I will have paid off the rowing machine, and then another couple months and my dumbbells would have been paid off if you look at it in terms of the amount of money I would have given to a gym that didnt really have what I wanted. Now I have everything I want in the comfort of my own home, and can sell it if I dont need it later on for almost all of retail price(they have the best resale value of any workout machines Ive ever seen, excepting the great deals like I got).

Not too practical in a small apartment setting.

Also, everyone who posted something akin to "I do XX weights/strength work Y days/week and XX for cardio Y days/week" doesn't get it. Lift for time and you don't need separate "cardio".

I like separate cardio. Gets me outside. I like to run and ride. I live in California, so I can do it year round.

I can't conceive of working with weights fast enough to replace 1.5 hours on a mountain bike.
