Thanks...the red absolutely glows in the sun, and I got the dealer to throw in the wheel upgrade ($450) for free. Unfortunetly, I had to pay MSRP for the bike and other options. I looked around and it is almost impossible to get a Harley dealer to give a discount on a bike, especially with the popularity of the Street Glide...I guess it has been Harley's most popular model since 2006 and the dealer only had three for the rest of the year...well, two now

Riding dirt bikes is like finding an endless playground. We rode 200 miles of single track, double track, gravel, and a bit of pavement today in the most beautiful and isolated areas that I have never, and would have never gone to if I hadn't bought a dirt bike.

I'm so completely obsessed and addicted to exploring the far corners of Utah. Takes the monotony out of life.

Yes, but it wasn't that bad, just on the descent to Ferron. We got a little lucky in that the black dirt sections of the ride stayed mostly dry and we were just ahead, or just behind most of the rain.

I wasn't sure about buying a touring bike at 27 years old, but the more I looked and test drove different bikes and thought about what I wanted to use it for (long weekend camping/fishing trips), the more it made sense.

but but but... i'm 27 and even I couldn't justify an Old Man's touring bike for as much as i tour. I hope i don't cause buyers remorse but did you consider the "Sport Touring" bikes like the FJR or ST or the new Concours?? I have an '07 Yamaha FJR1300. I just got back from Canada for 2400 miles roundtrip, and I've done almost 8000 miles since 1st of June including 3900 miles from the East Coast to Utah. 145hp plenty of tourque, R1 brakes, shaft drive, woot!

Had a monkey on my back all summer to ride over Cascade Peak to link up some vital single track on the way to Hobble Creek. I've hiked up one side and ridden my bicycle up the other, today was the day for the moto.

Up Squaw Peak Road to the Rock Creek Campground. After 0.5miles, hang a left and climb a steep, loose, narrow, over grown trail up the the ridge.

    Tom about a mile in.

Look closely, you'll see Tom cutting across the side of the mountain.

A view of Cascade Peak from near the crest.

Looking back at Provo and Lighting Peaks.

The city of Provo to the left with Utah Lake.

Now 5,000ft down the east side to the South Fork of Provo Canyon.

Don't fall to the right. Soon after this, the switchbacks became ridiculously steep and tight. Too bad the forest service can't figure out how to build a sustainable trail.

The trail improves as you descend.

    Near the parking lot.

Into the parking lot, then immediately back up towards Lighting Peak. There's a long stretch of super narrow, over grown single track that has plenty of loose rock. Hold on, hope for the best, eventually you get out of it.

The trail winds along the north aspect of Lightning Peak. Fun, narrow single track with bad consequences if you fall left.

One or two log crossings, no big deal.

Got up to Windy Pass and thought we were done with the techy stuff, then this section of four switchbacks came up. This wasn't really any fun.

But it gave way to some nice views. Cascade Peak on the left upper corner.

Once again, we thought we were home free and now it was time to finally get out of first gear and have some fun.

But then the trail started to get like this.

Yet another log crossing, this time Tom leaves some Yamaha Blue behind.

And then another one. Come on forest service, get up here with a chainsaw and get some work done.

    Timpanogos SE aspect.

Oh shit! This isn't looking good. Can't ride up and around it, so.........

The tree was too green to break branches and we had no saw, but wait, we have a leatherman with a 3" saw. Kinda worked to break a couple of key branches.

    Tom approaches.

    Then the hard work begins.

One over, one to go. Now we are committed to this route.

    Yet another log.

Ooops, what's your bike doing down there?

The main trail and log crossing is that heap of logs below.

20 miles of the slowest, most exhausting single track was followed by a casual 50 miles of ATV/fire roads back to the car. Never new 70 miles could cause so much exhaustion.

Nice TR Track, getting antsy, Next week, I'll be upgrading from this.

To This. Already had a pipe computer and skidplate upgrade, so it's ready to rip.

    200hp!

    Ridiculous...

And Tip, the GT is 150 hp, dont know where you got that graph, allthough I only use it on the straights to make up for my poor cornering, the bikes a bit heavy in the twities.. I ride with abuddy who has a Triumph sprint, great bike.

I dumped the gs because it was too heavy but I got a smoking deal on the gt. 5k off. Id have gone for an S or Tuono but Ive broken my right arm 3 times, skating and skiing as a lad, so anything over an hrs ride, the GT's cruise control is nice to have.

I hear great things about the bike, terrible things about the dealer support though. It wicked though.

Hey Trackhead...Keep it up man. That is what riding a bike is all about. I am super jealous as I do not have a dirtbike right now. I grew up riding stuff like that in and around Silverton back in the 70's. Prolly all wilderness now.

Anyone one to buy a Suzuki DRZ 400SM?

Did some single track around Logan (Richards Hollow) about a week ago. Got a late start so it was a little hot, but still a fun ride. The 450R was a little overkill (didn't really leave 1st gear and no place to open it up). I think a KTM 200 or trials bike would be fun up there. Next time I'm thinking north of Beaver Mtn into Idaho.

    Here are a few pics.

I should be around next weekend, so if you're looking for someone to ride with let me know. I did a small section of the highline trail (sink hollow @ the beav to the highline) about three weeks ago and it was pretty good. Should be even better after that bit of rain.

Trail riding stuff - in addition to the things posted (tube changing things, huge zip ties to tie the tire to the rim in the event of an unfixable flat/you just want to get back and it is not too far), I carry a bunch of extra stuff.

    - Bolts. Dirt bikes fall apart while you're riding them sometimes.
    - Chain tools - I carry a full size breaker and a little compressor tool to put them back together. Never needed them, but if I were to and did not have them.....
    - Spare master link. I just carry the old one from the last chain, keep using the same chains (master links are not universal, although I suspect that one from another brand of chain would get you out of the woods).
    - Spark plugs. I carry two. Probably more important on a 2 stroke than 4, but when a 4 DOES foul the plug, it pretty much never, ever starts. Ever.
    - Small bottle of two stroke oil, at least. On long rides, I carry a 28oz Sigg bottle with premixed gas in it.
    - Length of rope & 3 carabiners. Can make a makeshift pulley system to haul the bike back up to the trail, tow rope, etc.
    - Throttle cable. Takes up little space, weighs nothing, unlikely failure, but....
    - First aid kit. Duh. Matches and junk. Ibuprofen.

I carry a LOT of junk, but I ride alone a lot, too.

Any CO/Front Range people up for some nasty singletrack in late September/early October?

he got the dyno graph from a 2008 sport touring comparison on the motorcycle usa website: http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/11/539...g-Comparo.aspx

Cono, HP numbers are a lot like fuel economy numbers. rarely, very rarely, do the dyno charts actually show the same numbers the factories claim. there are many things that make a difference (altitude for example is a big one). also, sometimes the factory will publish output shaft hp not rear wheel hp, so any slack in the drive train can make a difference. until you actually dyno your bike, you really have no idea how much hp it has.

for example, my bike is supposed to have 103 hp, but on a dyno it actually pulls more in the low - mid 90s.

regardless, that beemer is a pretty light bike (for a sport tourer) and even 123 hp will make it get up and go in a hurry.

    FUCK!

It's like god is telling me I have to get a dual sport. Just got a call back from my mechanic and apparently one cylinder on my ninja 250 has zero compression and it's looking like it probably needs a new engine or at least top end. Grrr....

No buyers remorse so far. I actually really love it. Nothing against others choice of bikes, but I have just never been a big fan of the sport touring genre....and I am sure they don't even come close, but the 2009 touring frame actually handles suprisingly well. It is fun in the bends and confidence inspiring..at least as much as a cruiser can be.

    Nice bike by the way.

Loving the Chopper, 125 HP and about the same tourque. Fun in the twisties, what a hoot.
I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

First let me say that there are some incredible bikes in this thread. And far to many of them I would make space for and welcome into my garage.

    That said...

IMO, YetiMan gets the award for Ghetto soul with what has to be
the most badass interpretation of a Yamaha 650 special I have ever seen.
It may be the cheapest Yetiman but it's got a ton of rolling steeze.

Went on the Highline trail into Idaho, got lost, ran out of gas.

Quick summary: 10 or so miles on Highline to intersection, right down North Fork trail to paved road, left or right?, left for a bit, doesn't look right (I can see Bear Lake), right up paved road to Minnetonka Caves , look at map at caves, back to north fork, to snowslide canyon, trail disappears, backtrack to north fork, up to intersection w/ highline, back to dirt road that leads to the Beav, out of gas w/ about 4 miles to go . I figure I made it somewhere over 40 miles with the stock 450R 1.9gal tank nearly filled.

Some pictures I took before I got lost and pissed:
