    Yes, Reggie was very clutchy.

How about Don Baylor? Maybe not the best, but a pretty good early dedicated DH'er.

Roberto Clemente has to be one of the outfielders- he won golden gloves, could through out guys at home regularly from the warning tracks and was a good hitter too.
Other players worthy of my list:
    Cal Ripken Jr.
    ARod

    More beer for this one!

First I have to say, as a lifelong Dodger fan....Wes Parker? Seriously? (sorry big Blue guy in the sky).

I'm striving for the optimal combination of offense and defense here, and I'll even take a shot at batting order. Here goes.

Pete Rose 1B (SOB could play anywhere, and anyone who would run through hell in a gasoline suit to play baseball is on my team. Plus, he thought a line drive was the perfect hit).

Lou Brock CF He's fast, he can catch, he can hit. Any questions?

Wade Boggs 3B Solid enough defense, will move the runner, knows chicks in every city.

Ted Williams LF Do you want to pitch to him with men on?

Willie Mays RF Go ahead, walk Williams intentionally.

Johnny Bench C Thought about Campenella, I think Bench was just a little better.

Cal Ripkin Jr. SS In his prime, solid defense and handles a bat well.

Ryne Sandberg 2B I had a tough time thinking of second basemen, so I asked my mailman. He's from Chicago. Still, a decent choice and an all-around good guy.

Joe Dimaggio DH Here's to you, Mrs. Robinson.

Sandy Koufax P See above re: lifelong Dodger fan...plus, he's a lefty. I also thought about Carlton, and Fernando Valenzuela (because in his prime, nobody could touch his screwball). If I need a 4-man rotation, throw in Bob Gibson.

Goose Gossage Relief/Closer I just like the moustache and the intimidating presence onthe mound.

Man, that was harder than I thought. I'm betting we win a bunch of games.

Juice or no Juice? Are we racing Cigarette Boats?

    Irod is a fucking hack.

Robbie Alomar, Omar Vizquel, and Robin Ventura have absolutely no business being mentioned either.

OK here goes...all in their primes (say 5 year period)
C- Johnny Bench (I Rod is very close though)
    1B- Lou Gehrig
2B- Rogers Hornsby (Robbie Alomar and Joe Morgan close)
    SS- Cal Ripken Jr
3B- Brooks Robinson- best defensive 3B ever (Schmidt very close)
OF- Mays Bonds Williams (Aaron very very good for an extended period, but these players primes were better)
    DH- Ruth
    SP- Koufax, no question
CL- Rivera, not much to choose from

Aaron is a lot like Ryan- both played for a long time and put up unbelievable numbers, but I dont think either was the "best" during his prime, at least over another player.

Some of these- Omar Vizquel? Reggie Jackson?

Maddux is top 5 of all time. So is Clemens.

    Um. No. I disagree.

    edit

    Top 5? Clemens?

Excluding my man love for Ryan. I can easily come up with 5 pitchers better than clemens.

    Please do so.

Anyone have more Cy Youngs? Pitch better for longer in a hitters era? Koufax is the best but only played a short time. Maybe Gibson, maybe Maddux, Christy Mathewson wasnt as good. Walter Johnson? Bob Feller? Randy Johnson? No. maybe Pedro for a 5 year period. Id put Clemens top 3.

I guess it is a matter of preference, but I would take koufax, gibson, johnson and even page over him (from the old farts)

    Also,

you have absolutely no way of knowing if christy mathewson wasn't as good. My god the man debuted in 1900.

Although this is pretty damn impressive:

Mathewson's Giants won the 1905 World Series over the Philadelphia Athletics. Mathewson was the starting pitcher in Game 1 and pitched a 4-hit shutout for the victory. Three days later, with the series tied 1-1, he pitched another 4-hit shutout. Then, two days later in Game 5, he threw a 6-hit shutout to clinch the series for the Giants. In a span of only six days, Mathewson had pitched three complete games without allowing a run.

I have no idea if Mathewson was as good. But back then stats are a lot different too.

And this is impressive- 2 20 strikeout games 7 Cy Youngs.

So Koufax Gibson Johnson Page...and then Clemens still in the top 5? At the least its debateable.

Omar vizquel 11 gold gloves and a 274 career ba.

Ozzie Smith 13 gold gloves and a 262 career ba.

Im guessing Vizquel belongs on this list and in the Hall Of Fame.

Roberto Alomar 10 gold gloves 2700 hits and a 300 career ba is on his way to the Hall as well.

Ventura belongs on the i got my ass kicked by Nolan Ryan list.

Maybe on the Double A all time team rotation

My 5 man rotation would look like:
    Koufax
    Clemens
    Maddux
    Gibson
    Carlton

    With Pedro in long relief.

and if I had to win one game...Jack Morris. I dont know why.

Cause A Rod plays third base? If hes not the best SS on his team, hes not the best ever. But I see your point, for his prime he was probably better than Ripken.

EDIT- and he's a pussy choke artist and noone wants him on their all-time team.

Heh, I remember that series where the camera shot was tight on his face for most of the game and he looked like he was going to kill someone. Perhaps that is why.
