I ski because I'm gay.
The difference between sex and skiing is that after skiing, you can hop on the chair or jump in the skintrack and take another run, and another, etc. and if you're partner isn't willing, you can still go.
That said, I am saddened, no, truly disppointed that it has taken until the 4th page of responses for someone (me) to suggest posting nekked pics of your wife so as to stimulate our thought processes as we struggle to answer your question.

There's no way to explain skiing to someone who hates winter...as so many do. However, if they like snow then there's a chance. For me it is freedom from gravity, stress and the hum-drum of daily life. It is BEAUTIFUL out there. I love the way my heart skips a beat when I try a more challanging line and the way I feel of all of my muscles at the end of the day. I love learning something new each time out and having to deal with unpredictable situations (weather/terrain/snow quality). I also am the one who usually has to talk my husband into one more run....
That reminds me.....people all around here are raving about how spring is in the air and how wonderful it is that the weather is finally warming up. I just look at them and nod my head while I think about knee deep pow......Sometimes, I just want to cream "F**K You!" at them.
My anger management classes are really pissing me off.

I had a conversation with a clinically depressed friend the other day who is having a hard time managing his depressing. We were talking about why I have to try to get in as many days on snow as possible and why it's so great and basically everything in this thread. He understood, mostly because since he's tried everything else for depressing, he thought learning to snowboard may help. "I envy you for that," he says. He realizes that space in him is missing. That's sad.
I ski because you don't.
I didn't believe in reincarnation when I was your age either.
I always thought it was like sledding. When you're a little kid, going sledding is fun because of the speed, the jumps that kick you sideways, and falling doesn't hurt. I think most people can relate to sledding and have done it. Or at least has seen a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon.
So if you get someone to agree on sledding being fun, tell them to imagine how fun it would be to be able to turn, spin around, go off cliffs, and zoom between trees down super long runs on a sled, but in complete control. Because that's what skiing is like. Then add the mental game, being in the mountains and exploring, socializing with friends, getting a workout....and on and on.
I don't know why, but I feel a little gary for posting in this thread.
someone said it already: I ski because it makes me happy. very happy. then on top of that you can't think about other things when you are skiing (unless you want to kill yourself). that relieves you from a great deal of effort (it is known that hard thinking about stuff is hard work). less effort makes then even happier. being very happy and getting happier then makes you happy, which accrues on top of your existing happiness. which makes you happier, etc., etc.
then you come back at the end of the day, you get yourself out of the skiing boots. that makes you happy.
and then you have sex.
The beatings will continue until morale will improve.
