I was just going to post the following as a new thread, then I saw your post....it makes me feel much better to see a picture of someone besides me out in the water this afternoon!

Living in seattle its driven me nuts that I can see tidewater every day but still have to hop in a car and drive two and a half hours to the nearest surf. Every time there's been a windstorm in Seattle I've biked by the water just to see if there was a chance the wind was producing chop that was large enough to surf. Finally...today was the day.

Left work early, drove back home to West Seattle....and to my utter amazement the south wind was actually kicking up something that almost looked surfable....saying it was 2ft at 3 seconds would be an optimistic report...but it looked big enough.

I drove the 10 blocks to my house, grabbed my wetsuit and my piece of crap 9' Bic (purchased off craigslist years ago so the g.f. could have a board to thrash when she joins me). The indestructable Bic seemed like an appropriate choice since the waves were breaking in less than 2ft of water and it was a cobbly, rocky shore.

Wrestling the board in 30-40mph winds sucked.....whenever I took my weight off it, it had a tendency to go flying.

I'm sure that to the folks on shore I looked like the biggest dork in the world, but after two hours in the water I had actually caught and ridden some mushy, short period ankle biter waves and have finally satisfied my need to ride a wave in puget sound.

last winter living in bellingham I thought local swell was a distant possibility, but in seattle I wasnt even going to abuse myself with the possibility. If anyone is interested in sharing some bumps out there give me a pm and I'll get you my cell. It funny you posted this because my buddy was saying he was sure that some waves went unridden somewhere in the sound today but we were both busy. good getting after it guys.

How long did those waves stick around?

Nice Bud- I knew someone elses out there would see that as surfable. You should have seen the looks we got from the "alki" contingent. Really not all that bad for the situation ...and I too have looked at the shores around seattle and thought it would make a great place to have surf breaks.

Pollard- the waves are most likely gone and were driven solely by the wind that happened yesterday afternoon. I'm always down for a trip out to the coast or up to the straight now thats its winter time!!

count me in too....got a hooded 5/4 and I'm looking to check out the strait this winter. Skiing comes first though in the winter

The swell in the sound was probably 2-3ft when I first got over to Alki around 4pm and by the time I was out of the water at 7pm it had died down considerably....I imagine the time period of surfable conditions yesterday was only 4-6 hours.

But hey, at least we all know now....if theres ever a straight outta the south 50mph wind tearing through puget sound I'll be back with the Bic!
