    My multiple exposure attemt

I went out this weekend to landsail, but there was no wind. Luckily, I brought my camera, and I tried some creative things with long exposures. My goal was to create a multiple exposure in camera.

Here I exposed for the background, and then jumped in front of the camera for the remaining time.

As it got darker, I set my camera to bulb. Here I exposed for the group/fire, and then put the lens cap on, moved the camera, and removed the cap with the lens facing the sky. I think I left it there for 5-8 minutes. The campfire/group was over exposed, so the star trails are very faint (they can be seen in the darker areas).

    Zooming in during exposure.

This was the final picture of the night as these long exposures tend to run the battery low fast. The cold didn't help matters. There is a speedlite directly behind me, and one in front a little bit camera left. I got the "deer in the headlights" shot first, and then pointed the camera up for a long time. I had to boost contrast, and make it darker to reduce all of the noise from such a long exposure.

Here is a picture I took on the way home. I noticed the nice light driving by, and debated whether to stop for the next 8 miles. I'm glad I went back.

Thanks. This stuff can be done in Photoshop, but it is fun to try it with out. I think that there is some potential for Halloween effects.

Really nice and creative pics. But you do realize that they ain't actually multiple exposure pics (eg. HDR-pics) as you only shot one pic.

To be honest, these pics are much more cool and "real" multiple exposure ones, as they are just basically PhotoChop-jobs and yours are real old school -ones that actually take talent.

The camera is a Canon 20D, but any camera that allows for manual control with a bulb setting, and a sturdy tripod should work.

I think the two of us have different definitions of "multiple exosure". Mine comes from back in the film days where you vary the light intensity, and subject matter durring the exposure of one frame of film. However, the literal translation of "multiple exposure" does indicate that it comes from separate frames. As a result, I think of HDR as more of a digital composite process involving layers. That's my take. Photoshop would be easier, agreed.

you need to be set to "bulb" exposure.

If the 20D and 30D are as similar as I think, to get the bulb setting (shutter is open as long as the button is depressed) you must have the dial on the top left turned to "M" (manual). Then you can rotate the wheel past 30 sec and to bulb. In Tv, the limit is 30 sec. It helps to have a remote shutter release. I bought a knock-off on E-bay, and it works great!

While the knock-off ones "work", if you want to get more into night photography etc, I recomend getting one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-TC80N3-R.../dp/B00009XVA3
Allows for alot more control then the little knock off versions. Worthy purchase to add to your setup IMHO.

Dumb question--I have a 20D and have tried a few star trails... If I leave the shutter open for 20 minutes, it seems to take the exact same amount of time for the camera to write to the card, ie., 20 more minutes. Which is a royal pain in the ass if you want to do long trails, and you risk running the battery out. Is this normal???

BTW, great pix. I like the deer in the headlights pic--it looks like an 80's movie cover.

Yes, and it isn't actually the write-time that's so long. The CMOS just records the same time with the shutter closed and then it removes possible mistakes from the 1st pic.
