    Rwandan Political/Social Causes/Effects Thread

Gonna start a separate thread outside memorium for the political rammifications of the events in Rwanda.

    IMVHO:

Placing blame is counterproductive and childish. It is critically important to examine what went wrong both at the local (micro) level and at the international (macro) level. Pretty clearly the international community dropped the ball and bears some greater or lesser responsibity. I think we've learned a bit in the time since then. I saw a dig at the French (everyone's favorite whipping boy) which I think is to an exent driven by shoddy media coverage in the US, the current prez of Rwanda and the French are in a bit of a spat so yeah, he's gonna get his digs in.
"It is not the result that counts! It is not the result but the spirit! Not what - but how. Not what has been attained - but at what price.

Okay. Where to start? The Africans already fucked things up in Rwanda before the Euros got there. The Froggys probably did exasperate things, however, by reversing the order of power to better suit their needs.

When we went into Afghanistan and then Iraq, I mentioned this, but it was lost in the patriotic noise.

It was a pretty standard genocide model...

a rift between indistinguishable peoples "hutoos and tootsies" (sp?) grew after the departure of the british

members of the target group were disarmed
everyone had to carry IDs declaring their ethnicity
tootsies were dehumanized within the hutoo culture
an event was used as a trigger (death of the president in a plane crash) and blamed on the tootsies
hutoo authorities called for the "tootsie cockroaches to be squished"
    killing ensues en masse

UN did diddly squat... the UN completely failed in it's purpose here.

The US, as a leader in world peace, did diddly squat. We didn't have to send our troops but we could have organized the surrounding African nations and the rest of the world.

Are you talking about the fact that there are other, more pressing problems than what was in Iraq? I don't remember what you said about Rwanda at that time.
Just so frustrating that things like the Rwandan genocide still happen...civil war style conflict presents immense problems for the international community, I think.
