In the upper right corner of the screen, just down and to the left of where you see it says "Welcome, NmTAOSskier" when you're logged in, is a little thing that says "Search."
If you use that Search function, you'll find there are loads of detailed threads on this subject.
The short answer is that it's fine, you just need to have a binding that will mount correctly in the channel left behind when you remove the plate.

At some point later, someone else summarized what we'd discovered in terms of which bindings can work without having to get mount-what-you-want plates, but I'm not sure where that particular summary thread is.
