    the tip

    The tail

Saw some B4's around but didn't get my camera out quick enough....also some of the pros don't like having pics taken of their gear.

    Size, BIG.

That's quite the swallow tail on those things.

These look like some sick skis. Good spot and photos Idris, i have been wanting to see how these compared to the normal S-Lab swallow tail. What were the dimensions on the Pro?

I hear 100mm underfoot, but the guy didn't like me taking pics let alone measuring the ski!

Not to belittle the beast... but i bet it doesnt ski like a 205 since it only has about 195cm of edge and a deep swallow tail that is also a little bit twinned up as well. I know that the not pro model S-Lab skis much shorter than it looks because it is only about a 185cm edgeable ski. Overall though, I am really stoked to see some sick new sollys. Who knew we would get a 205cm 195cm edgeable swallow tail with a slightly upturned tail. Mmmmmm, I want some.

    TS:
the 195 is flat, non pilot for sure (I have some upstairs!) and yes they ski much shorter than they are marked
I've seen the 205 and I think they are flat too. not sure

why is solly making these skis and not selling them? Doesn't really make any sense to me.

cause what the pros need and what the rest of us gapers need are not the same things.

For a start most of those pro-stock Salomons break really easily. A friend got some from Kai Zakrisson two winters ago - he hit a rock (gently) and they exploded. Like F1 cars: shit hot but really easy to break.

I don't understand those Swallowtails though. I thought the point of a swallow was to allow a longer sidecut profile but a lower volume tail - so you could mount further forward (for a turnier ski) but still have float (because those tails sink). Seems that those swallows just make a longer (therefore bigger, less sinky) tail - no real point as far as I can see. Am I just dumb?

I though it was the other way around. Having a longer sidecut allows you to mount further back because you have the edge length of a longer ski, but the swallow sinks = much better pow performance.

not sure what the sidecut jibba jabba is...

swallow tails come from shitty snowboard design. the theory there was that your tail would sink so you would not have to lean back to keep your tip up. note the same time this design was popular was when snowboards had fins on the bottom so "they would go straight on ice"....right. maybe solomon should try that too...

they look bad ass as all hell though, that is for sure. winterstick has the swallowtail market cornered these days for snowboards.

i guess the swallow tail makes sense in theory. not too sure how much sink you would get out of it on skis though. only weird euro dudes ride swallow tail boards really these days.

    Craig Kelly is my co-pilot.

There were tons of those at the snowbird comp. Pretty burly looking ride.

Oh yeah, I remember one other thing about these bad boys: the edge doesn't extend the length of the swallow tail fins. They end right at the top of the notch, unlike the Sanook and Tabla Rasa.

So I'm all out of ideas of why. I know I keep hearing "sinking tails"

I'm on the team and I'm getting a pair. But fuck if I'm giving them to anyone.

I skied the 205's last winter and they have the good charecteristics of a huge burly ski but are suprisingly quick and snappy for being a 205.

And the reason they didn't sell them was because there was a problem with the mold so they didn't go into full production. But who knows if they will ever go into full production.

The reason F1 cars appear to "explode" is more of a safety issue. When you smack into a wall at 200+ mph, that energy has to be absorbed somehow. This has very little to due with durability- the cars are engineered to break up on impact.
