    Build pr0n.

This is a dirt berm to rock face wall ride thingy. It's not done yet, it still needs some love on the rock work and then a metric shit ton of dirt but you get the idea.

This photo gives a little perspective on how large the rocks we are using on the rock armored transition off the rock face.

Basalt Mountain, and a lot of the Roaring Fork Valley are primo right now. Usually do Basalt Mountain Trail on the top of the mountain as a loop but I've never thought the DH was all that. Half way out and started thinking the last 2-3 climbs would make great descents

Spent a few days in Revelstoke on a BC road trip from Seattle last week. It did not disappoint.

Sunset shot from my first ride as an SLC resident. Multiple small punctures from trail garbage but a hell of a good run down Bobsled almost in the dark. Those berms are in rediculously good shape!

    Saturday.

I think the trail opened again a week or so ago?

Got a chance to ride the Trek trails today with a buddy. Not a ton of mileage, but super fun. Felt great to ride the dirt I grew up on after 20 years of western rock, dust and gravel
That looks like a very nice ride. Excellent MTB ride for us mortals. I have lot's of options here but surrounded by Mountains everywhere I go starts with a gut wrenching UP HILL

Yeah, those trails are really fun. It was unbelievably novel to ride in a hardwood forest. I think they have 100ft or so of vert to play with. The climbs up to the top of the glacial drumlins were over quickly and didn't feel like much, but the builders pack in a lot of fun stuff on the way down. Some fun jumps, drops, berms fo sho.

I also got a tour inside the Trek facility. That was fucking cool. It was great to see a bunch of carbon frame production happening right there in Waterloo.

I "think" they're Eucalyptus trees, non-native to California but everpresent...

That's Sutro, right? Yes eucalyptus trees. Or gum if you're an Aussie. The native plant nazis in SF want to mow them all down. The make a nice mini rain forest when it's foggy. At least they did before they started getting thinned out to "save" the trees.

Yep. Here's a shot from 5 minutes later on the other side of the mountain. Total wet fogout on the west side and dry sunny bliss on the east. Gotta love SF's microclimates.

They're supposed to be awful for spreading fire when they burn and they squeeze out the native stuff. But they smell nice and look pretty.

That's the urban myth but not really true. At any rate, Sutro is a whole different microclimate than the east bay hills where the big fire was in the 90s. Sutro is generally so wet from fog. that it doesn't have much danger of fire

Go forth and ride, then bring back pics

Morning ride at Annadel Park, my go to spot. In another thread those of us out west were apparently not posting enough techy sections so here's one from today...

On another note, why do illegal trail builders always get lazy and go so damn steep? I'm sure it's super fun for like one month of the year but otherwise meh. (This comment does not apply to the photo obviously)

I think it's because trail building is hard and doing it illegally is even harder, especially alone. Another reason I have found is that they don't have the experience to see the right angles. I did it too when I first started. I actually really like steeps but after years of seeing the effects of poorly built steeps I'm all about location, location, location.

This may be just my opinion but I really feel that good trail builders are always looking at how to get the water off the trail. How often I think depends on the type of soil. Here in Flag with the crushed dacite I think it's ideal to get moving water off at least every 25 to 30 feet. A pure fall line trail on an open steep slope won't get rid of any water and after 30+ feet the moving water picks up a whole lot of destructive energy. It seems like you can get away with much longer fall line sections up in the Rockies.

Short steeps with a good sight line into a flatter section that doesn't force riders to grab a shit ton of brake is good but big rock faces are even better.

Holy smokes, conditions are all-time right now. Colors, tacky trail, lack of work, perfect temps. This is from a loop on the west side of Teton Valley, in the Bigholes, going Grove to Corral to Red Creek (where most of the pics were taken), back up Corral and down Grove.
My riding buddy is a good photographer: this is me...
