Had a super fun day with HVskier and friends Saturday off Teton pass. We are in desperate need of some rain, root drops are now just giant roots sticking out of the ground and we were both coming off our pedals, but damn was it fun!

Forest sections up high had some fun dry loamy bits in between the deep silt.

Got my bike fixed this week and went up to China Camp State Park to ride. I finally understand why people say good things about that place. There isn't any alpine, but the views don't suck. I also got a nice reminder of how much harder it is to ride 20 miles on a mountain bike than on a road bike. Oof.

spent the day at duluth bike fest, left the big bike at home and fiddled around on djs to avoid crowds, then upped the beverage intake and spectated the dh race in the afternoon, good day with good peeps, scene is growing out here rapidly

Little Mountain Mt Vernon (yes WA)... Galbraith it's not.. but it's minutes from my door and never fails to leave me smiling.. great for getting a quick ride in..

here, i bought gloves and kneepads to facilitate low speed falling into bushes.









I see the appeal of going for a ride and hanging out with buddies on lazy summer afternoons.



I still struggle to see the bike as an efficient mode of transport. Feels like most of the time I'd be faster without it both up and down. Especially on longer rides with tons of switchbacks that I can't do. Probably different on trails built for bikes? haven't been on any.. It's getting easier to just let the bike do its thing and roll over stuff but I still have zero technical control and I don't like that feeling. Starting to figure out how to hop with the rear tire in the parking lot, I suppose that counts as progress.

it takes awhile to get to the point of being able to go faster over techy stuff (which everyone says is easier but I didn't believe it either when I first started riding) and you just started riding, so give yourself some time.
particularly if you can ride the same trail frequently - then you can really see progress or you just have a really good day where you are on it and kill a section and from then on that section will no longer give you pause. It's a great feeling.
Tough when I suspect you are a person that is used to being good at stuff but this will come relatively fast for you I bet

If you are going up those trails, yes it is faster to hike up them! If you don't see the bike as being efficient (you should be overtaking hikers), it seems like your local trails are a bit burly for riding. Another problem may be who you ride with, they may enjoy brutal uphills and tech downhills but it's a good way to ruin a beginner on the sport. Just guessing here, of course.

It will come. Try some roly poly stuff rather than the super rough that you've shown us so far. When you average 5-6mph/8-10kph you'll feel better about it.

Very nice out on Kachess Ridge yesterday, even went for a little side hike from the saddle. Packing a summit beer and a camera for a 3,000' climb up a 10% grade road could seem insane to some, but why not.
