Yeah, it comes out right around the same spot at the bottom but you use a different shuttle road to get to it. Tres Hombres. Complete opposite of Xanadu. I really enjoyed both trails, I rode em both the day I was there.
Strangely I've camped out at the top of that road but never ridden it. Great views from up there. It's much more technical from my understanding, right?

Nice views from the TRT around Mt. Watson. Local Tahoe MTB question maybe someone here can answer: are the property owners between the end of the Deer Creek trail and highway 89 as uptight as their no outlet signs suggest?

Definitely more techy than xanadu although that trail is pretty straight forward other than that one rock slab section and even that isn't bad. 3 hombres has a bunch of really large gap jumps but they all have go arounds. There is some steep rocky parts, some exposed parts and it seemed like the whole trails was really loose and slide'y from top to bottom, not in a bad way but totally different dirt than xanadu. Crazy because they are both in the same area, my guess is way more work went into xanadu and 3 hombres was just ridden in, maybe even by motos.

Yes, and that's why the trail goes left, as lame as it is.

I've had to cross the truckee river (like IN the river) with a shotgun pointed at me.

That was years ago but the trail to the left alleviates that and that's why it exists. Just go that way and deal with the horrible routing and elevation stupidity.

If you have never taken that left and gate is closed, just ride up to it and it will automagically open for ya

Ah, okay, so there is a legal way to get to 89, just not as convenient. I was already 20 miles into my ride and getting low on water so I didn't want to risk going down deer creek only to have to come back up. I just took western states back but good to know for future reference. Man, OTB is dusty and slippery as hell right now. Still fun but it definitely kept me on my toes.

Well you still go though private property, I believe it sold to new owners in the last year and they still seem to be cool with it. Be courteous, wait for everyone in your group to be together and move though swiftly and quietly. A few bad apples could spoil it. I think there may be long term plans to try and create a legal tie back into the lower western states.

A random in my shot of Tahoe at the lame-o Flume Trail. Nothing exciting, but the views were great. This was back on a smoke day from the two fires.

It would be awesome if you could easily connect OTB > Deer Creek > Western States (three bridges) DH. Hoofing the fire road part of western states back up and over from the bottom of OTB was not the most enjoyable part of my ride, that's for sure. In hindsight I suppose I should have just gone back up OTB and then up to Painted Rock but I have this weird aversion to going down and back up the same route.

^^ there is a new trail that bypasses the Western States wall, called something like the Wallternate, much nicer way to get up to the TRT.

Works well for dropping Missing Link and climbing back up to TRT to continue to TC. Not sure why someone would go down OTB, I've only climbed it going from Missing Link>Tevis>OTB, and usually continuing to Watson Peak. Some of that private property (not exactly sure of the boundaries) used to be somewhat accessible for skiing years ago with a connected friend as an escort, but that got shut down after too many people started trying to go there.

And 15 years later I'm still kicking myself for being in Angel Fire for a bike race and passing up South Boundary the day after. Figured I'd be back there, but it hasn't happened yet.

OTB was actually pretty fun to ride down. I had already looped the TRT around Watson and started my ride in TC, so really just went down that way to check out Deer Creek since I'd never been. But yeah, Painted Rock DH and Missing Link would have been more fun for sure and less effort, or thunder / glass mountain.

Anyway, back in Sonoma, today I did a quick lunch lap around Jack London Park and decided to try the GoPro mount on my new helmet. Nothing technical other than one rocky patch, just fast and flowy singletrack... and no people around as usual.

OTB is just off Mt. Watson road, so on the other side of Painted Rock... not too far from the TRT on that side. Deer Creek is further west up 89 a little ways past Squaw. I still haven't ridden it so I couldn't tell you if it's worthwhile or not. If it's not, then OTB isn't really worth it either because of where you end up.

Thanks. I'm hoping to get back up there next week and will try to explore a bit

In regards to the new "wallternate" trail. I like it but I've heard some talk that now that it's is there the forest service may take out missing link. That would suck but wouldn't surprise me

I would kick the FS square in the nuts if they pulled that shit. Most fun trail in the area, especially since they destroyed the original Glass Mountain. Wouldn't surprise me, either, but I think they would have already done it if it was gonna happen.
