just got 1x 11 gearing set up and my bike looks so weird to me with the rear cassette looking so much larger than the front ring! you get so used to a huge ring in the front with the 2x or 3x set ups

is that like the front ring is sort of in the middle of the big and little ring???

Mine is getting changed but I don't know what I want to do and I dont think I should get rid of granny yet.

so I could use their little formula and figure out what my easiest gear is verus what my hardest gear is and then figure out how any changes would fall within..

This is good cause I pissed off my bike friend.

Meh, none of this needs very much thought. A 32 up front and 11 in the rear is plenty for almost anything. The only time I wish I had a bigger ring up front is when I'm on long rides with wide open fire roads. I don't ever wish I had a granny ring.

yes front ring is middle of the rd bc there is only one of them (newer concept to me but works)
I really liked having a 2x 10 (2 rings in front, 10 in the back) but andrew kept telling me the 1x 11 was "essentially the same gearing-wise" (one learns to choose their battles lol + he was ordering parts for me so went with it)
there's a bunch of intricacies in gearing so am still wrapping my head around it but I like the simplicity of single ring up front.

but I think starting off you should maybe keep the 2 x set up or something with a good granny gear bc it helps with the mental factor of being able to just sit back and spin up a climb is huge.
but I know your bike buddy is into the minimalistic gearing tho so it he suggests the 1x 11 set up it still offers a good granny gear

The 2 x 10 made more sense when we were riding 40 pound 7 inch squishy free ride bikes up long steep climbs but now, the bikes have come such a long way the granny is obsolete, especially for a hard tail.

yep think that is the magic ratio but some of us had only considered the ratio like a decade into mtb'ing
had a 34 up front with 10 in the rear- a bit too much for the steep climbs round these parts
now 32 front and 11 in back is perfect

bike friend is not pissed off which is good... I actually havent been using the granny granny that much, but I usually stop climbing more of lack of skill than lack of strength unless its really long and steep. Normally there is a root or rock or something I think i wont make it over, or try and don't make it over because Im not going fast enough cause its skeery.

Sunday was Sedona local Simon Bosmans 55th birthday. We went for a ride and then got all "King Of The Hill" in front of JP's garage.

I know this sounds dorky but that's a nice looking multi use trail build right there. I'm involved locally here with the advocacy group and trail building so I notice and appreciate things like this ride/walk option built into the trail. Whoever built that does good work.
Agreed. Very nicely built trail. Part of the reason I took this pick was this section had such a sweet build. (Maybe a "how to build trails" pictorial thread is needed....) This is the Van Sickle trail next to Heavenly. Much of the Tahoe Rim Trail has similarly well-built features.

Agreed. I just went 1x11 today and holy shit I wish I had done it sooner. Never using a front derailleur again.

Simple enough to start with a 28t front ring, and as you get stronger/better, bump to a 30t, then to a 32t, or whatever.
Paired with an 11-40 or 11-42 cassette, you have a lot of range.

Relatively easy to do without breaking the bank these days as well!

but what all do I have to change? It has to be compatible, right? If I change the cassette, I have to change the shifters and the derailer, right?? and the chain potentially?

Yeah, you're basically looking at a new drive train by then; wear yours out first, then worry about it. You'll conveniently find that about that time you'll have a stronger idea of what you want to switch to...might even be full squish or some other whole new bike.

Oh, then you get to answer the complicated question: how long do you want to keep the bike? I think there's a thread for that.

Depends on what you have on there. If it's 10 speed with a clutched derailleur already, you can get a chainring and then a cassette or maybe just a big add on cog for your existing cassette.

If it's 9-spd or you don't have a clutched RD, you might as well go 1x11. Need a shifter, RD, cassette, chain, chainring. Shimano's 11s mountain cassettes go on 8/9/10s freehubs, sram's do not.
