Got up to the ski hill last week, it's a good choice if you want to do a lot of climbing and you get an almost 20min singletrack descent afterward. On weekends the bar is open so you can stop for a beer and lunch. I just wish there were a few more trails up there.

The views are nice. Point six is the highest point I can think of that you can ride to in the area.

There was a stop to pick huckleberries on the way down

Just a little worried by all the trees and rocks in my way!

At the moment I am having some difficulties figuring out good trail options but figuring out new ski zones also takes a while, so yeah... Almost all the single track (i.e. hiking trails) is technically illegal, with the notable exception of the Nordkette trail, which I want to be very far away from. Sölden sounds good, will try to splurge on a lift ticket occasionally.

    Crazy cool kid stoke DTM!
I know it's been mentioned elsewhere on this forum, but Mastering Mountain Bike Skills by Lopes and McCormack is a great resource for advice on what "good" technique should look like. It's available for a reasonable price in paperback.

So many of us who got our starts back in the day learned bad habits. You have the advantage of starting fresh with a mind open to coaching and no bad muscle memory to fight. That's not a bad starting point.

Speed is your friend until it isn't. ;-) I will say, a few hard MTB crashes have actually helped me step up my skiing quite a bit, since crashing on snow seems like nothing in comparison. Regardless of the perspective, riding mountain bikes will absolutely improve your skiing in a variety of ways, and not just fitness / core strength.

Since there hasn't been any video in this thread in a while, here's the NRA downhill right out my new backyard here in Truckee. Nothing technical or gnar, but it's very tight and just fun and flowy singletrack.

I'd certainly agree with not trying to crash! But IME, a person who is new to the sport and trying hard not to crash will a) like the sport less, and more importantly b) be more likely to crash. (see my response to dantheman below).

Agree (but sorry evdog, there's always an exception). This was my point in post #2194.

Exactly. "Speed is your friend" is something I have been told since I started biking. That doesn't mean mach 10, and nobody in this thread would say that it's impossible to injure yourself biking (see my pics upthread). Because crashing is part of riding, and if you are not willing to crash on a mt bike you should just not ride a mt bike. It doesn't mean liking the crashes or seeking them out, just that riding fearfully of crashing is not helpful to avoiding crashing.
I agree with most of this. I just thought in earlier posts there was a rather flippant attitude towards crashing. Every fall's a ground fall in mountain biking.

^^^quick update that agrees with you. Turns out wife fractured her radius from her standard, low speed fall onto flat dirt on Sunday. Doc had to cut her wedding ring off due to swelling. Seriously mtb crashes can be scary. The only saving grace is you are generally going slower than on skis and in less exposed terrain.
No gnar was harmed in the writing of this post...

I think you're missing some reality here.
    ACLs for skiers.
    Collarbones for MTBers.
It's a wash, and has a lot more to do with how durable/lucky you are.
However many are in a shit ton.

I'd say mtb crashes for me have generally been much more painful, separated shoulders, 7 week recovery for concussion, major hematomas, open wounds from branches...

    YMMV

    mo' pics please

I am getting ready to go for an easy ride but came upon this.

Looks like a Woman in Truckee had a crash, went home and died in sleep from injuries' ??

Sweet jebuz! Enough crash talk. It happens. Stay loose, ride within your capabilities, don't dead sailor and you'll probably be alright.
Create some sort of crash thread if y'all want to keep talking about it.
    Back to regularly scheduled programming.
On the weekend of the 4th, Mrs Joetron and I decided to avoid PC crowds and get weird in a familiar place while doing some prospecting. Didn't find much, but had a good time.

Not on this day. We just poked around all the old mine roads on Flagstaff and over towards Michigan City, but didn't get up on the ridge. I'm due for one of those Days rides though.
I'd love to clean up some of the trails and link some things on that side of the road. Would be a nice addition to the Castle loop when heading up there to ride. And getting some rideable connectivity to the ridge would be rad.

Love riding these weekday mornings when there's no one out here and you can go nice and fast.
