I don't think the problem is Strava, or putting stuff in this thread. I think the problem is too many assholes running around not respecting the trails, or other users on the trails, which ruins the experience for others and gives all participants in that sport a bad name. This is true for biking, skiing, fishing, camping, van-life, boating, etc. My opinion is the culture around these sports/activities need to change so there is more self regulating, and more calling out of the bad behavior from within the sport, along with more education about respectful use. Right now the culture is all bigger/faster/more instead of enjoy/share/respect.

Not going to try and change your perspective. Biking gives me joy; so does comparing my times on Strava. If you don’t get joy due to the people picking up the sport; I suggest you ride earlier in the day or find a new sport. Orrrr move to the middle of no where and build your own pirate loamers.

We are the problem; but I don’t see it as a problem. Again; when comparing advocacy groups in MTB vs Hike/equestrian/hunting we have almost zero pull. Sure Evergreen is helping here in WA; but again our advocacy efforts are quite small.

What are you personally doing to help shape the course of your local trail system? Join your local dig crew? Get on the monthly meeting? If you aren’t doing things to help advocate for mitigation (knowing eMTBs and the hoards are coming) politely STFU.

FTR I'm simply pointing out the obvious through years of observation, not lamenting about the past - I don't mind the new users at all, I like almost all the new smoothed out trails and still love the old janky trails, and I like the new bikes, I was on Strava for years before quitting (tried it, went too fast, saw how bad it was), and maybe some day I'll get an ebike. So don't twist my words to 'oh you must be an old man stereotype' because you are too lazy to see what I'm getting at.

Far from it homie. Those guys are FAST!

In my opinion biking does not suffer the way skiing does from overcrowding. Simply put people are lazy and few want to put in the effort to ride 10-15 miles with 3-4K of vert. Fewer want to ride steep/janky/tech. Also; trails can be ridden thousands of times and never get tracked out.

As far as I’m concerned; more bikers = bigger voice for advocacy. And maybe 1/10,000 might want to help build some damn trail.

Ha! Not really. My wife sells wakeboard/waterski boats, and this exact problem has caused them to ban all wake sports on like 90% of the river here in Portland. Basically a handful of douches ignoring the safety rules and/or blatantly disregarding them because 'merica, and pissed off all the other river users enough they organized a ban through the legislature. When I lived in Utah I dealt with a lot of use-group conflicts in my job as well. It's a tale as old as time.

MTB isn't immune from that, as the early days of the sport have shown us. I think we are still feeling a lot of the headwinds that the early access bans have caused.

Dang, we drove through that area last year but the trails were closed due to fire danger. Will have to try to get back.

There's camping close by at the Fox Mountain OHV area for free too. Nice sites with views of the Blue Mountains.

Climbing trails routed so well and with such good sight lines that 2 way traffic isn't a problem. Imo good too for kids

Cedar City trails have some interesting variety. Well built uphills (we're sort of expecting this now out of Southern Utah towns), interesting singletrack with challenge on ups and downs so you have to pay attention.

Then some beauty jank uphills where you've got to plan out your attacks to clean. And superb rockwork and routing on trails like BoulderDash, Boneyard and Lava Flow. I particularly enjoy how crashing on Boulderdash would likely maim you and your bike.

Also enjoyed how the downhills weren't mindless plowfests but had enough jank that you have to think

There's probably a good 3 days to ride and explore in the area. We scratched the surface

I’ve had people ask me how they’re supposed to make tight corners without skidding after admonishing them for skidding/roosting corners. Uh, slow down and finesse it? Too much motocross injected into mtb through the’90s.

Damn dude... That's what happens when you're tricking bro! Glad you escaped with minimal injuries.

I've broken carbon bars by over torquing them. So I try to stick to the torque specs but I use ample amounts of carbon paste to try to avoid the situation that you've just encountered.

My bars have been rotating back on me. I like to angle the bar so the rise is in line with the fork and I keep noticing it is off a bit. Each time it happens I've tightened the bolts a little bit more but still doesn't seem to be enough.

That second pic reminds me one I saw years ago on a local forum. It was a mid-OTB shot of a DH racer in full superman, with a ball pit photoshopped below the rock drop she crashed off. It was hilarious. Wish I'd saved a copy of the pic, that forum no longer exists.

Can't disagree here. Racing in the 90s meant skidding in races some, but not while trail riding.
