never in my life have i seen such an inane argument. the amount of time it would take to sort through all these route suggestions is far greater than the amount of time any of them would save. i do this drive (albeit to burlington) several times a year, and i just take good ole simple 95>91>89. sure sometimes its not the quickest, but whats the difference? ya get thar when ya get thar, so i just take the one involving the least focus. however, the whole renting a car outside of nyc is a great idea.

it's not inane at all (and if this discussion seems like the most inane "argument" ever, you clearly haven't spent much time on the interwebz). If you will do the same drive a number of times, it is well worth the time to find the best route. And any particular route only takes "focus" the first time, after that it is easy.

BTW, to Burlington the best route is definitely not 91 to 95 to 89. Thruway is faster.

you are sooo not getting a ride from me, JONG.

besides, we're new yorkers... if you think this is bad, you should hear some of the discussions regarding the best route to JFK.

"I never knew I could drive like that. I was going faster than I've ever gone before, and yet, it all seemed to be happening in slow motion. I was seeing three and four moves ahead, weaving in and out of lanes like an Olympic skier on a gold medal run. I knew I was challenging the very laws of physics. At Queens Boulevard, I took the shoulder. At Jewel Avenue, I used the median. I had it. I was there. And then, I hit the Van Wyck. They say no one's ever beaten the Van Wyck, but gentlemen, I tell you this... I came as close as anyone ever has. And if it hadn't been for that five-car pile-up on Rockaway Boulevard, that numbskull would be on a plane for Seattle right now instead of looking for a parking space downstairs."

What the others have already said--but I will reiterate that 95 to 91 is fastest when there isn't traffic. It's always a roll of the dice on the way to New Haven, though. Just use 1010 on the tens, and 880 on the eights, and you'll be fairly up to date on traffic problems.
Just got back from S. VT using 91 to 95, took less than four hours even with puking snow in VT and 30 mph getting to Brattleboro.

Whatever you do stay alert! If you take the Taconic the deer population this year is absurd. A couple of rotten hunting seasons combined with easy winters have left driving through southern NY downright scary.

Ceej, I told you to get a parking spot in Hobroken for the new wheels. No fighting the tunnel/bridge BS. 2.5ish from my door to Manchester going 87/787/7.

    Congrats on the wheels, btw.

well you're either thinking of 787 or Alternate 7

if you're trying to reach the Northway coming from the East on 90 you've got two options, one is to stay on 90 until you hit 87 then 87 becomes the Northway. Or you can take 787 until you hit Alternate 7(which is now 65 mph) and get to the Northway that way.

Actually I pulled over a few times on VT route 9 to let the yahoos who wanted to go 50 in a few inches of unplowed snow with a freezing rain base go by me. I only went 'fast' on 91 when it got into the mid 30's in MA and was just rain.

So how much snow did VT get?

Dear New York Traffic Gods Amoung Men,

Once again I grovel for your expertise. If this humble girl had to get to Milford, CT by 4pm for a wake (READ: IMPORTANT NOT TO BE LATE) on Wednesday afternoon, leaving from midtown Manhattan, what time would you leave?

And what route would you take?

Please assume this girls job is not too psyched about her leaving early because she has the next week off to be in Jackson Hole.

Love and many human sacrifices in your honor,
    BeanDip

Same way I gave you to get out to the Bruckner, stay on that to the exit for the Hutchinson River Parkway north (sorta a hassle exit) then to the Merritt to Milford Pkwy. I think that's the 4th or 5th exit after Trumbull. What time to leave? Ooof. 1:00 maybe. You'll probably get there in 90 minutes or less but all it takes is one accident or some other stupid shit to screw it up for you.

reading through this thread again tonight, and trying to devise a strategy for tomorrow after work to get to quechee, is giving me an anxiety attack.

with all the conflicting advice here, i think i'd be better taking a jet plane. you know, the kind that takes off from a treadmill.

It isn't rocket science. To keep it simple either take 91 or the thruway (87) north. Since Quechee is closer to 91 I would take that. If you were going somewhere in the western part of the state take 87. All the other short cuts are a crap shoot. As far as how you get to those two roads, your guess is as good as mine. If you don't know you need to get out of NYC more often.

ps. I didn't read this whole thread so feel free to tell me to stick it if this has been said, etc.

    IM WORKING ON IT!!!!

shesh. get off my case finally bought a car so i have mobility to escape on the weekends!

yeah ultimately for tonight the strategy is going to be "low stress" we are waiting till 7, packing some good grinders for the ride, leaving from uptown, and whatevs. When we get there, we get there

i seriously printed out this entire thread last night and was cross referencing what everyone was saying with the rand mcnally. it gave me a panic attack.

    printed it out?
    cross-referenced?

it sounds like you spent much at least 2 stressful hours trying to save 30 minutes on your low stress ride.

ah steve, but if i save 30 minutes off the trip each weekend for the next three or so years, that's a pretty good ROI for those initial 2 hours of research

I have a feeling that you'll have figured it out on your own by then - with a satisfaction that all the internet advice and rand-mcnallies in the world couldn't give you.
