    The Fall Striper Run 2007

Few things get my blood going like when I know there's a good chance of catching a striped bass. August was a difficult striper fishing month for me, but the growing # of sub 80deg days and sub 60deg nights signalled times were about to change.

This thread is for fall stripers and the images that go with them. I'll start:

Ft. Tilden, NY September 18, 2007

Waves 5-7 feet, small craft advisory...not ideal jetty weather, in the dark:

    Lookout!

    Casting at dusk

    ....and...the first striper in weeks.

There will be more to come. If anyone else is out there in the surf let's see those beautiful bass!!

    Got out again last night.

    Date: 9-25-07
    Time: 8-10pm
    Location: Fort Tilden, NY
    Tide: Beginning of outgoing
    Wind: SW 10-15kts
    Waves: 2-4 ft

A gorgeous night with an almost full moon:

Near high tide on the jetty made it a little wet:

So decided to stick to the edge fo the surf for casting:

After about 1.5 hours and the tide noticably on its way out I got a good strike about 20 feet from the shore. A few minutes later got this guy. 27.5" (measured 3 times ) back it went:

One quick shot of the whole water's edge with an open shutter and time to go home...

For reference sake, the lights on the left and the mass in the middle are on opposite sides of the beach and the moonlight coming from the right is almost directly straight ahead.

Fall run really hasn't begun yet.

Water is still warm, and the past couple of days didn't help.

    Plz post keepers.

    Echo2 12'6" 9wt Skagit (2h)
Currently got it loaded with an 11wt Rio Outbound Int.
Gonna go snatch up an Outbound floater of the same weight later.

Tons of blues in the canal to go nomnomnom on your eels.

Tide: End of incoming, 2hrs outgoing
    Wind: Not much...
    Waves: Not many...

    Another gorgeous day...

First day of cooler weather and the bait fish were everywhere along the beach. After about an hour the fish showed up and it was on.

Every 3-4 minutes the surf erupted with stripers plowing through concentrated schools of bunker so thick you could feel them bumping through yourwaders trying to find a place to hide.

I was getting nothing throwing plastics and everything else, but once I switched over to snagging and live lining it got better...

    Snagged!

    Go be eaten...

It was amazing watching the water boil 10feet away, tails wacking, then feeling the line get hit and having the line ripping out as the whole scene continues at your feet.

    Two of many...

After about an hour of on/off action I hooked into something stronger than the others. After about 5 minutes what I thought was a striper jumped straight out of the water 15 feet in front of me. A 10-12lb bluefish. It was big for the beach and broke off soon after, but a pretty fun sight.

Soon after more blues showed up and the stripers were gone. I switched to casting by the jetties and snagged this guy...

called it a day shortly after...the fish weren't big (so no need to remind me... ), but definately a morning to remember.
