    Achilles

The best way I can describe this is: imagine a typical drinking straw, thread the straw with a line of wool, now pull each end alternately so the wool passes up and down inside the straw.

That's how my achilles - or the area around it feels. The sensation is odd and not too comfortable.

I ran a flat half marathon four days ago and went into that with nagging calf musles.

I'm now resting, but want to get back out there.....

How soon can I run, and is it bad to train on this problem?

That's called tendinitis and it sounds like it might be pretty bad. Rest, ice and ibuprofen and I'd hold off running as long as possible. The eventual result of achilles tendinitis is rupture and trust me when I tell you it sucks.

Why on earth did you go into a half marathon with a nagging anything?

Truth is right but probably more like tenodynovitis. That creaky feeling is swelling around the achillies in the tendon sheath. The tendon is surrounded by a covering/sheath and you can get swelling/irritiation of this.

Ice, rest, gentle streching to maintain ROM, temporary heel lift and go get some rehab. They can do some ultrasound or iontophoresis. After the initial swelling and pain go away you can do some strengthening focusing on the eccentric part of the exercise.

As for training, try some deep water running with an aquajogger or stationary cycle to maintain fitness. No running until this gets better if you are smart.

    ^^^^

    Thank you both.

One week off so far, going to take this week easy too.

Frustrated, but not going to rush this.

(My brother was running the half marathon too and if I'd pulled out I'd have got serious grief - daft, but in the end I think I may have got away with it. Came 405 out of 15,600 so not only did I get lucky with the level of injury, I also had a good run ...for me.)
