    Need recommendations for Oahu lodging

The girlfriend, myself, her parents, and another couple are going to Hawaii for a combo Thanksgiving/wedding vacation. The people are getting married at some country club near Waikiki, so we have to at least be on Oahu. I'd much rather be on Maui or Kauai but it prob won't work out.

I don't have the time or patience to endure the millions of over-marketed Oahu /Honolulu resorts and hotels.

I'm hoping somebody here can recommend a decent, low key, out of the way condo rental company or hotel.

My idea of going to Hawaii is not congruent with Waikiki. Years ago I stayed in Kialoa and the north shore, but it was with a college friend's parents. That was much more my style.

    Thanks.

I am going back to Oahu in a few weeks and am staying near my family's town of Kailua. In and just aroiund that area (Lani Kai as well), there are some quaint rentals ranging from cottages, to suites, much like a bed and breakfast. try here: http://lanikaibeachrentals.com/

Kailua/Lani Kai is about 30-40 minutes away from Waikiki, but IMHO is worth the slight drive to get away from it all a bit. Have fun

The windward side of Oahu is nice. I grew up in Kailua on Oahu and Lanikai was the beach my family went to all the time. We used to sail the Hobie Cat 14 out to the Mokoluas and snorkel the coral heads off of Lanikai beach all the time. Then we moved to Wisconsin and I have been bitter ever since.
I'm sure much has changed in 19 years since we moved, but Lanikai is still probably a very tame beach with no wave action. Very pretty warm water and great sand. Kailua beach is well known for windsurfing and kite boarding, not much wave action there either but getting good wind can be a blast if you're well equipped (or taking lessons).
If I were planning a trip, I would try to get a place a little more out of the way, up on the North side, by Shark Cove. There is far less in the way of rentals and tourist availability out that way, but it's cool and there is still enough tourist shit available nearby. It's not that close to Waikiki, but going over the Pali Hwy from Kailua can take forever, too.

Lanikai is the spot my wife and I have talked about doing a large family trip to hawaii. Kailua is great.

I'd much rather be on Oahu than Maui or Kauai.

    Look no further

Check this site out for a home or condo. Might I suggest the North Shore. Waimea Bay perhaps?

The prices for Waimanalo seem to be generally less than the other areas. I have really fond memories of that area. It's a gorgeous beach and pretty low key. You can still drive to Kailua and save a pretty penny.

Incidentally, I am going to a wedding with our old college crew on Oahu as well so I'm glad this thread popped up. The hotel rates at the resort my friends are getting married at (the Kahala) were something like $500 a night for the smallest, cheapest rooms

Most of my buds are only 5-6 years out of college, so we don't have the dough to spend - I mean we've gotta save for hookers and blow! I think we're gonna do Waimanalo and rent a minivan ... now the only big question left is how to choose the designated driver

Nalo?? There is a reason why the prices are lower there. IMHO, Waimanalo is the last place on the island I would want to bunk down. They eat haoles for breakfast there. Where did my "No moking" sign go??

ROFL, yeah man, but oh you can get some authentic food with the locals there I remember bbq'ing it up with all the hardcore hawaiians. I couldn't understand half of it, "brah."

Oh, the land of loco moco and spam ...

EDIT: that I had to re-educate myself what "haoles" were. It helps marginally to have yellow skin over white =) My family on Oahu had some friends out in "Nalo." I just remember diggin the fact that the beach wasn't overrun by Japanese tourists. Loved the sand and the rememberd the breaks being good for body surfing and messing around ... but it has been about 10 years since I've been out there.

Gotcha. Two generations of my family get beaten up in that city more than others, so I had to throw that out there. Just south east at Makapuu has a good break that doesn't usally result in hospital visits
