Because I know you'll all appreciate this

Got a nasty big toenail injury playing soccer last weekend, but it just drained. Lots of red and purple puss. I even squeezed out some little chunks. The nail is shot before the season even begins!

bummer to hear bout the nail. Schmear, keep that nail on your toe for as long as possible.
    Protection.
Put a pin under your fingernail and push as far as possible. Understand the pain?

Yeah the "little chunks" visual really did it for me. Appetizing!

Yeah, I understand the pain. I go through this every season, like most of you. I get them from skiing and playing soccer. One year in college at soccer tryouts I had to do the home remedy of searing a paperclip and poking it through. The smell of burning nail isn't pretty.

    Sorry to ruin everyone's lunch.

EGGPLANT ROLLS WITH SPICY TOMATO SAUCE

Active time: 45 min Start to finish: 45 min

    1 garlic clove, minced
1/4 teaspoon dried hot red pepper flakes
    7 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/2 lb plum tomatoes, chopped
    1/2 teaspoon sugar
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 (1 1/4-lb) eggplant
    12 1/2 oz ricotta (preferably fresh; 1 1/2 cups)
    1 1/2 oz finely grated Parmigiano-Reggiano (1/2 cup)
3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh basil
    1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Special equipment: a well-seasoned ridged grill pan or a gas grill (see cooks' note, below)

    Make sauce:
Cook garlic and red pepper flakes in 1 tablespoon oil in a 2-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat, stirring, until garlic is golden, about 30 seconds. Add tomatoes, sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon salt and simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened, 15 to 20 minutes.

    Grill eggplant while sauce cooks:
Heat grill pan over high heat until hot.

Peel 2-inch-wide strips of skin from opposite sides of eggplant and discard. Holding a knife parallel to a peeled side, cut eggplant lengthwise into 8 (1/3-inch-thick) slices. 3Brush both sides of slices with 3 tablespoons oil (total), then season with salt and pepper.

Grill slices in batches, turning over once and brushing grilled sides with some of remaining oil, until golden brown and tender, about 4 minutes, then transfer to a tray.

    Assemble eggplant rolls:
Stir together cheeses, 2 tablespoons basil, pepper, and remaining salt. Divide cheese mixture among slices (3 to 4 tablespoons per slice), leaving an 1/8-inch border along edge. Roll up each slice, beginning with a short end, and serve rolls topped with sauce and sprinkled with remaining basil.

    Cooks' note:
    • Eggplant can be grilled using a gas grill. Preheat all burners on high, covered, 10 minutes, then reduce heat to medium. Grill eggplant on lightly oiled grill rack, covered with lid, turning over once, until tender and grill marks appear, 4 to 5 minutes total.

    Makes 4 main-course or 8 first-course servings.

Well if you're going to do that I'll pass this on - some of the cooks on the web site I got that off of suggested popping the finished product in the oven to warm through before serving (however be careful not to melt the ricotta too much). Other's suggested using more pepper flakes if you like spice.

    Good luck!

Maybe I'm a freak but I have never lost a toe nail in all my years due to skiing. I spent 3 yrs in Jackson & 2 yrs Alpine and not one. All of my bro's lost them. Sure I've lost a nail before, but from other reasons (dropping shit on it, hard stubs, etc). I have wide feet and have always had footbeds -

I stubbed mine mile a couple weeks ago. It got shoved back. Now it bleeds all the time. A constant halfway clotted red clood puss. Fun shit. Never hurts anymore though. Which is good.

    Most painful thing ever done:

Dropped a motorcycle and tried to catch it. The only things touching ground were the two tires and the starter switch on a pressure treated retaining wall. between the switch and the wall was my thumb. Yanked that fukker out and looked a the meatcicle that had been my thumb. Woke up a roommate (it was 6am on my way to a breakfast shift) called work to say i wouldnt be in, and went to the hospital. Damn did that hurt.

Got to the er, upon examination it seemed i no longer had a thumbnail. I had basically exploded my thumb. And broke it. Four stiches across the exposed nail bed (freaking killed after the novocaine wore off) a percoset scrip and on my way back home. Got my roommate to help me lift the bike and get it back in the garage and there, on the retaining wall, was my thumbnail. Punched a hole in it and put it on my keychain for some reason. Still got the scar and the nail still hasnt grown back yet.

But it never got infected (thank god!)
