I had all sorts of stupid ideas for a ski storage set up, yours was waaaayyyy less complicated and expandable for when the kids are older and have gear. Plus if one decides to board I can buy 12" shelf brackets and it will work for that too.

^ What's the idea behind adhering strips of wood as opposed to using one piece? Cost? Layered look?

You can bend multiple strips of wood. If you'd have wanted to cut that curve out of a solid piece, it'd have to have been like 3' wide.

Shit you built with your own two hands (picture thread)

Layered look plus it's cherry wood, it's easier to bend it this way and it's an old school lamination technology

The crappy 'guest books' that I see at most weddings have always bugged me- I write my name on this page and then you're just going to put it in a box and leave it in your closet/attic/fallout shelter. So I wanted to make something that everyone could sign at my wedding that would also look good hanging on the wall.

I bought some maple boards, glued and clamped them together and sanded smooth. Then I taped it off, traced the logo, and cut it out with an Xacto knife. I pressed the tape as hard as I could and applied a couple coats of stain. After I pulled the tape, there was a little bit of bleeding along the grain of the wood, so my wife took a brown sharpie and traced the edges to make them cleaner. It also made the logo really pop. After everyone signed it, I applied a coat of poly and now it hangs in our living room.
I'm originally from Vermont and my wife is from New Hampshire, so it was pretty cool that the states hug each other like that. I was really happy with how it turned out. All together materials probably cost me $50-60. Thinking about doing this on the side for a little extra money.

    That's pretty cool.

My wife and I felt the same way about a guestbook, but we're very much not crafty. We had everyone sign an autograph mat with our picture in it. After the wedding we put a photo of us from the service in it.

And we had custom bobbleheads made of us to use as a cake topper.

They cost more than the cake, but were well worth it.

Since winter is over its outdoor furniture time. Decided to build a new base for the chair seat. Sawed down some leftover pieces, joined, and glued

Started on building my first credenza. I actually turned out to be more of a dresser but whatever. The carcass is made from birch ply.

Made the drawers out of beetle pine then milled the bottoms into slats out of some fir and cedar that I had found in an alley in East Van.

I decided to use cherry for all my drawer fronts. They were rough cut ends I bought from the lumber store in 4 foot sections. Wood was pin to work with and I would never use rough ends again. too much waste and alot of planing.

My drawer pulls are custom to me. I designed them using some pretty beefy vegtan leather and some aluminum rod laying around. I had the rod cut and then the leather stitched tight round the rod.

To attach the pulls, I hand chiseled out a slot in the drawer front. After sliding the pull in and out the back, I used a hard fir wedge and jammed it in between the two leather tabs out the back. Then chiseled and sanded flush. No glue. This is the detail on the back of the door and drawer. No one will see it unless you look inside the door, but I thought it would look cool.

Tops and side are made from hot rolled steel cut to size. They are 1/4 inch steel and weigh a lot. My guess is the whole unit weighs about 300 lbs. Welded ready rod onto the insides of the panels allowed me to attach the carcass to the outside steel. Top piece basically sits on the top with 4 guide posts.

Having never installed drawers before, it was definitely one of the biggest challenges for me. Lining up the boxes and then screwing the plates on. A carpenter I am not and I sure got frustrated a few times trying to get the gaps equally spaced.

I am going to make another one but a bit smaller and lower. A true credenza and not a dresser.
What if "Alternative" energy wasn't so alternative ?

For some reason your pics aren't showing up on my phone / the app bad dancer, but it sounds like an awesome project.
