    Useful Idiots...cont.

Another rich hollywood commie showing his stuff.
Sean Penn meets Chavez in Venezuela

By IAN JAMES, Associated Press Writer Fri Aug 3, 9:23 AM ET

Sean Penn applauded President Hugo Chavez as the Venezuelan leader lambasted the Bush administration and demanded an end to war in Iraq.

Chavez met privately with the 46-year-old actor for two hours Thursday, praising him as being "brave" for urging Americans to impeach President Bush.

"In the name of the peoples of the world, President Bush, withdraw the troops from Iraq. Enough already with so much genocide," Chavez said before an auditorium packed with his red-clad supporters.

Penn sat near the front, at times applauding and nodding in agreement. He is the latest in a series of celebrities who have visited Caracas, including Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte.

Chavez said he and Penn discussed the question of "why the (U.S.) empire attacks Chavez so much," saying Venezuela's oil wealth is a key reason.

He also said Washington is "afraid that the people of the United States will learn the real truth" about the situation in Venezuela, citing his social programs for the poor.

"If the people of the United States, those millions and millions of poor people ... if that nation realizes what is truly happening here, there would be a revolution in the United States," Chavez said, eliciting applause from Penn.

Some Chavez opponents were angered by Penn's visit.

Cuban-born actress Maria Conchita Alonso, who grew up in Venezuela, said Penn is lending support to a "totalitarian" leader who wants increasing control of society — a charge Chavez denies.

In a phone interview from her home in Beverly Hills, Calif., Alonso said although she respects Penn as an actor, she hopes he "comes to his senses and he realizes that he's being used."

Penn, who won an Oscar in 2004 for "Mystic River," didn't speak publicly. Chavez said the actor came wanting to learn about Venezuela.

"That man has opposed the war in Iraq with all his strength, and not only that, he went to Baghdad ... and now he comes here. He's going around touring the 'axis of evil,'" Chavez said with a chuckle.

    Meh..

As long as he keeps turning out absolutely killer performances in every movie he's ever been in, I could care less who he visits.

Chavez has been shuting down television stations and newspapers that dare to question his AUTHORiTYE. Is that what Sean wants for the US? A communist dictatorship with no freedom of speach. The same freedoms that allow him to spew all his political bile are not granted in his utopia of Venezuela.
See Communism has been tried and tried again, and while it is a noble idea it is always corrupted by little men with big egos that get drunk on power, see Castro, Stalin, Kim Jong Ill etc...
Oh well, soon Queen Hillary I will rule and all will be well again in Hollywood. They will feel like good millionaires and the rest of the world will love us again. Ah, those will be good times. Just like the 90's, no terrorism (joke), no poverty, no single mothers, and no more war.
The funny thing is nothing will change, they'll just feel better about themselves. Oh, and taxes will be higher, yay.

If Chavez is so great, why does he need to ride rough shod over the whole country. If Dick-Heads like Penn went to Venezuela and spouted anti-Chavez, or pro-Bush rhetoric he would disappear.

I think it is cool people are going to places like Venezuela, but to go there and get the party-line bullshit is like going to the US and getting a tour from the Chamber of Commerce. Not exactly an un-biased point of view.

Good point. If I may...."Useful Idiots" was the name given to our liberals and socialists (and American Communist Party members) by the Kremlin during the cold war. I believe Penn's proving to belong in the latter. He's been made a millionaire while "working" in our system. As a child of privilege from a Hollywood family all he knows how to do is emote. He's a joke.

The phrase is widely attributed to Lenin, well before the Cold War Kremlin. However, there is no evidence that he ever used the phrase. It would've been difficult, since he spoke no English.

The reason for the phrase's popularity in modern U.S. politics should be obvious: it allows one to insult one's opponents as being both stupid and traitorous at once, and to avoid responsibility for the insult by claiming that someone else said it.

Perfect for anonymous gutless chickenhawk cowards.*

That was a obfuscating post meant to try and distract people from the fact that if you support Chavez only because Chavez opposes Bush, then you are an idiot who is useful to Chavez. It doesn't matter who coined the term; the criticism of reasoning failure and its associated effects is a valid one.

Honestly I couldn't give a fig what Sean Penn does or where he does it. If this glorified Banana Republic dictator wants to trot out an ACTOR and claim it gives him credibility on the world stage then let him. As soon as his oil runs out he'll be coming to us w/his hat in his hands...

...that is if the Campesinos don't lynch him first.

Well, first he'd have to find an American newspaper that actually questions the authority of the administration - as far as I'm aware there are none left (if there were any to begin with).

I think the NYTimes does an OK job of that most of the time.

Yabut Cliff would actually have to know how to read to be aware of that fact.
