For the first time in more than 100 years, bald eagles have returned to Chicago, state wildlife officials report.
A pair of nesting eagles has been spotted along the Little Calumet River on the city's Far South Side, WGN-Ch. 9 reported. Officials are declining to say exactly where the birds were seen so that no one disturbs them.
Eagles last nested in the Chicago area in 1897 in the Indiana Dunes, CLTV reported.
The bird at one point had been considered endangered, but their numbers have increased in recent years as a result of breeding programs and pesticide bans, officials said. They are plentiful in western Illinois along the Mississippi River.

I was in my old builing (at work) a couple of winters ago and saw this bird flying towards the window. I got closer and I'm thinking "that things pretty big, must be a falcon or something." As it got closer it just kept gettin' bigger, by the time it was 200 feet away I was like "holy shit that's a bald eagle." It flew right at the building and cruised by the window prolly 30 feet away, pretty amazing to see in flight.
yeah bald eagles are remarkable. foggy and I had two swoop right at the car while we were driving back from silverton in feb. I had never seen one in CO and these two almost hit the car! it was remarkable.

KQ- where do you see them on the way into work?
There is a breeding pair that lives in the Arboretum and fish in the mornings along the 520 Bridge. You can always spot them sitting in a tall maple (think it's a maple) on Foster Island right by Husky Stadium.
Driving by? pffft. I have a pair nesting within 100 feet of my house. They come back every year in February to mate and raise their chicks. The past two years they have managed to raise 3 chicks each year.

The University of Pittsburgh runs a field research lab at the Pymatuning Resivior on the PA-OH border that is home to the largest known nesting site of bald eagles in either state. I am thinking about taking some field courses up there next summer.
