Hi all,
I just got off the phone w/ Nils and I wanted to let you guys know that he's having surgery for a compression fracture of LZ vertebra in about 2 hrs. He's not in NYC, this is happening upstate near his home.
What happened is that a tumor has weakened a disc in his spine and caused it to collapse. Nils has been in an unbearable amount of pain for weeks as a result. They will be repairing this fractured vert during today's surgery. And hopefully Nils will see a marked improvement in his terrible back pain.
The prognosis seems to be good overall, and his doctor is apparently a skier too. He told Nils that this should not affect his ability to ski (whew!) as long as he is not a "jumper." Nils said that's okay...though his hucking days are over before they really began as he's never really been into that...
It seems he is in good hands though, and I have faith that he'll come out of this feeling better and ready to focus on his healing, his life, and his skiing. No more back pain.
Nils sounded amazingly calm and strong. I continue to be amazed at this guy's resilience and ability to stay positive in the face of so much pain and a terrible and frightening disease. No matter what it throws at him, he seems to perservere. He's hopeful and no matter how depressed he is and how difficult it is to deal with his emotions and his physical condition, he manages to pull out some more strength and move forward.
I know it has helped him to know that he has friends here who care about him, pray for him, enjoy his contributions/sense of humor, and are really behind him staying strong and beating this cancer.
Nils, please know that we're thinking of you, and you're going to be okay today. Stay strong and positive and please check in as soon as you can because we need you here.
Good luck, man. And here's to no more back pain!
