Pictures from the swamp: Skiing, Wakeboarding, and Scenics Summer 2007

I haven't had much to do this summer except for work, work out, ski, and shoot pictures. I just hit 6000 photos for the life of the camera the other day, and by sheer statistics one would expect some of those to be decent.

Just wanted to share some of what's been going on down in the swamp this summer. I've had a LOOOOOT of technical problems uploading and such, and my laptop was just stolen, so some work may never be recovered. So please forgive me for uploading so many at once. I'll update as I can.

As always, any constuctive criticism would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to try and have the subject in focus once in a while.

I don't really know anything about photography, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

Well, I'm a photo jong, but I will try to offer something constructive...

I like the idea of the sunglasses pic with the reflections, but it seems a bit blown out because of the bright sunlight. I'm sure that the correct way to fix this in Photoshop would be to work with the RAW file or use curves or whatever. However, for a quick and dirty fix you could do the following...

    - duplicate the photo layer
    - change the blend mode of this new layer from normal to multiply
    - if this isn't enough, repeat the above step
    - if it is too much, reduce the opacity of the new layer
    - if you want to fine tune which areas are effected, use a layer mask on the new layer
(a similar quick and dirty method can work for underexposed photos by using screen for the blend mode instead of multiply)

I guess I shouldn't assume you have Photoshop...

As these two photos are OF me, they are obviously not taken by me. The first one of these was just for fun; I was trying as hard as I could to look like an idiot, and I included it for giggles. The second I thought was somewhat interesting.

ptavv: which picture(s) are you referring to?

    Christian: thanks for the tip.

dbp: I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't have photoshop, and I'm shooting in JPEG, not RAW. I don't think I have the capability of shooting in RAW. I may try to do some editing in Irfranview. In the sunglasses picture, what would you say is blown out?

I HAD some more that I thought were decent, but they disappeared with my laptop.

Heh, I guess I have a new goal: pictures that do anything but provoke a sarcastic response.

Yeah, I caught myself assuming you had PS. I'm a photo jong, so it is entirely possible I don't know what I am talking about. It may be that his face isn't overexposed, but that he is simply lookng into unflattering bright sunlight. Again, I am not really qualified to be offering criticisms - just my opinion. I do like some of the second set of photos.

always thought you guys in the South were kind of nuts for wake boarding in the swamps! Ever have a gator or water moccasin swim right by you while you're waiting for the boat to turnaround?

just kidding- nice water ski shot at the end there.

Actually, yes. Once in five years of skiing on that river, but it did happen. I dropped the rope one day and heard a big splash. My friends came around in the boat and said, "GET. IN. NOW." Apparently it was a 10 ft. gator who had made the splash...

Thanks, Nicholas. And dbp: that was most certainly the case. I was shooting at about 1:00 pm if I remember correctly, so the light was very consistent. It was one of the bluer skies I've seen here in Louisiana this summer, so the light didn't change much from place to place.
