    Camera Insurance

I'm about to be traveling out of the country, and I would really like to insure my camera gear ASAP. Does anyone have any good recommendations for insurance dedicated to camera gear (and laptop)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(a quick search yielded nothing, but if the information is indeed already posted, please guide me towards the light)

Is it possible to do through home owners or renters insurance?

Most travel insurance policies have riders you can purchase for camera/electronic gear for not too much extra--even the biggies like travelex. Haven't purchased the riders myself, however, but just FYI.

My renter's insurance policy only covers up to $1k outside of my home.

I looked into the traveler's insurance, but I would like a dedicated policy for my gear, as I intend to be bringing it into the backcountry and other such places where breaking a 1200 lens would be devastating.

Any other ides? (lookin' at you pro-photogs)

You might check with All State. There was a thread about it a couple of years ago on the dpreview forums. A lot of people had used All State and were very happy with them. But I've never checked into it for my gear.

    NPPA

The National Press Photographers Association offers photog-specific camera insurance.

You need to be a member to get the insurance, but its only $65 for students, and depending on what you want to do with your photography it might be a good thing for you to join anyway.

    Here is the link: http://www.nppa.org/member_services/insurance/

That is probably your most straight-forward bet.

Not sure if the NPPA Ins. is good for outside the US. They may have a rider, but that would make it pretty fucking steep. I do know Lloyd's of London has "professional equipment" policies, but you may actually need to be a pro. Then again, it all depends on the premiums, don't it?

To whomever suggested Allstate's (et al.) Renters' insurance, I know for a FACT that doesn't cover theft outside the US. Ask me how I know.

My insurance is with All State and my insurance guy worked out a deal since I had coverage with them for other things.

There were some stipulations - I had to be a pro and it had to be my primary source of income. There are many policies, but if your investment is under 10k in equipment it might not be a good fit for you. YMMV.

If you know your history, then you would know where you coming from, then you wouldn't have to ask me, who the heck do I think I am.

Do they provide any assistance in obtaining replacement gear?

If you are out of the country getting a replacement item in a reasonable time will be your biggest hassle (unless you are in Europe, Japan or the like). I've not found insurance policies for stuff <$5k fiscally worthwhile.

    No assistance on replacement.
