    Fox 40 single crown....

A while back I heard from some shop kid at a lbs that Fox was going to make a single crown freeride fork with 40mm stanchions for '08. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I googled it and didn't find anything.

Also what would everyones feeling be about this? Awesome or overkill?

I actually heard the same thing from a bike shop employee; hopefully it's actually true.

Pretty unlikely if you ask me. Vaporware. The 40 is as light as it is because dual-crown forks can have thinner tubes. A fork with the 40's stanchions ending in a single crown would be a fork-snapping fiesta. They'd snap right at the stanchion-crown junction.

Whatever bike shop employees are fantasizing about this, it stands as much chance of happening as those shop employees have of getting a ride on a porn star's pony.

From what I heard it would be a 180mm fork, so Fox is essentially just copying the Totem--and to a lesser extent, the 66. Granted this is just what a couple people have heard, so take it with a grain of salt (or perhaps an entire bag). It'd be cool to see Fox getting into the big single crown game, but for the type of riding I'd do on a bike that big I'd probably pick Marzocchi or RS over Fox.

Well, I just got done with a ride with the team manager for Giant.
He just got back from the in-house 08' product launch...No such product from Fox has been spotted by any of the Giant product managers.
Trust me, If Fox wanted it specced on 08' product, these guys would know.

If they are launching it, it is serious black-box, unvieled at the trade show stuff.

(or maybe they ain't talkin' to me, either, of course!)

aside from this fork simply not existing, it would be terrible too. the lowers and stanctions and crowns would just not be anywhere near strong enough as they are currently deisgned on the 40 to be strong enough as a single crown.

the 40 is a race fork designed to be as light as possible in its current design. they would need an entirely new platform to make it go as a much less strong/rigid incarnation (ie single crown)

Well, yes and no...for example, the 29-er FOX will only be available OEM for Trek, from what I have heard, and the official rollout on it is going to be at interbike...so there are some anomolies in their product launches.

    Same for Marzocchi.

Dingleberries over at Empty Beer have said that there are 2 different kinds of 29er Fox Forx for 2008. There's the OEM kind, and there's the F29 retail aftermarket version. From a review of the service manual for the 2008 models (now on-line at Fox) it seems that this is true. The bigger problem is going to be the price of the Fox F29 fork, which will likely give the White Brothers "walking defect" fork a run for its money.

    aha.
But I don't think any non-oem's have shipped yet, correct?

Back on topic, Crud, I am sure you know that Fox would COMPLETELY re-engineer the stanchions for a SC rollout. The assertion that one would fail after two rides is sheer hyperbole, IMO.
