Binding jig - wide ski adapter - tutorial

As a follow-up to this thread:
    http://tetongravity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85524

I've been searching for some sort of adapter to fit bindings jigs, for wider skis. I have a Look/Rossi wide jig, but it only goes up to approx. 98mm underfoot.

I found that sliding closet door brackets add about 20mm to the jig. I bought them at Home Depot; about $3.50 for a pair. Here's what to do:

Wide jig + adapter brackets (the little rubber feet at the top of the pic came with the jig; remove them to install the adapters):

12mm offset brackets -- the widest I could find. They came in a smaller offset size too, but get the widest ones you can. I'm going to keep looking for ones with higher offset.

Remove the plastic wheels that are riveted to the brackets. I used a Dremel tool. Very easy.

2 nuts-n-bolts per bracket arm. On the Look/Rossi jig, the holes in the brackets matched up with some of the holes in the jig arms, so I didn't have to drill anything. If I drilled the brackets (or the jig arms) the brackets would be straighter, but who cares.

One end, completed (this photo makes them look uneven, but they're OK):

Completed jig with adapters, sitting on a Rossi Axiom (110mm waist), with easily another 10mm of clearance to go -- so this little project should work for a wide Look/Rossi jig, fitting skis up to approx. 120mm waist. Eyeballing it, the jig looks centered on the ski using these brackets.

Closet Door Brackets...Friggin' Brilliant, Chup! I've been pondering the same "ready-made" solution as an add-on to a standard Sallie jig I have, and you have made life a whole lot easier.

I think I'll try the method you posted above and then drill some 2x4's or something to test out the final tolerances.

Update: I need to re-mount those brackets square to the jig. Mounting them at an angle doesn't work; the jig ends up a little twisted on the ski.

I just picked up 2 sets (not Stanley) that are squarer that what the Stanleys appear to be. I will post pics when complete.

Let me know the brand on the brackets too - thanks Phil.

I got some non-Stanley's too from Lowe's that were very square. I forget the brand, but I can post a pic of what they look like when I get home.

Guessing this thread helped inspire interest in my jig for sale in gear swap.
Where did you come up with this idea? Brilliant.

cool, but you've got a huge stand-off from the ski topsheet now. When drilling, you'll really have to watch to make sure the angle is perp. to the ski or you could get a few mm's off on the hole + an angled hole!!!

Maybe it's not that bad, but give it a try on a 2x4 to see how far off it is possible to get.

Of course, this is all moot if you just keep the drill centered or use a drill press!

In testing mine out, I will post pics later, I forgot my card reader, I see no problem with the height. These particular adapters are nice and square and will sit flush on the ski surface. These will give me a max width of about 110mm, more than I need.

Here are a couple of pics of the ones that I got at Lowe's. I still need to "beta" test them, but they seem to sit fairly square as is. I might grind them the top ends a bit to allow the jig to sit lower on the ski, but it looks like that would only get me about 1-cm closer and I would still be up pretty high when drilling. Anyhow, I figure it is better than the "eyeball" method I had to use to drill my 'Toons.

    Update:

I bought another set of brackets from Lowe's (similar to the ones in Phil's pics above, "prime line" brand, but with more offset), and tried this out again this weekend by drilling a mount into a 2x6, then measuring the holes from the edges of the 2x6 with calipers.

Still no good. The brackets just don't sit squarely on the "ski" (2x6). The Lowe's brackets were soft metal, and bend easily; this is probably the problem.

I also measured my jig and did a test-drill with the jig, without adapter brackets, on a 2x3, just to make sure my jig is still centered. Jig is fine; measurements with calipers are spot-on.

I've mounted a few pair with my setup, no issues. Brackets do not bend at all.

so i did some searching and came across this thread. i did my own little tech thread over on NS and I figured i would post up a few pics of my version of this here. I used the same brackets and took careful measurements to make sure it was squared up. I also used 3 screws on each bracket to avoid any run-out. I am using two different sets of brackets. One with 6mm offset and the other with 19mm offset. i would love to hear some comments and criticism about the setup.

Great info. Picked up a skinny jig & am definitey going to give this a shot.

Rumor has it that true adapters may actually exist, but this seems pretty quick & easy.

I know that Marker + Tyrolia offer wide jig adapters. In my experience, Marker adapters also fit on Dynafit and Fritschi jigs.

Dunno about Rossi or Salomon wide jig adapters.

Word. I was told that the Tyrolia adapters fit a Solly jig.

not sure if this has been covered....

Just bend - dremmel - hack saw skinny ski clamp points off
Use a digital caliper to center the jig on wide skis.
clamp it with c-clamps - tension clamps

    Drill

    this works!!!!

can post pics of my (solly Jig) later

This idea seems superior... being that far off the ski when drilling the holes makes me think I'd have a better chance of mis-aligning a hole with the jig way off the ski than if I just use paper templates and take my time.

i've got the marker jig extenders hell of a lot moore easier. They fit on my frischi and newer dyna jig ' but I neededto dremel 1/4 inch off all the legs on my older jigs.
    Work great though
