Of course, it would be a crime against humanity to let a case of Echezeaux cook in an overheated garage. For the sake of mankind, keep those puppies cool. (I'm very impressed.)

Also, I forgot to mention that Alder from Vinography recently posted his scores from Pinot Days in SF.

It's set up to keep temps < 62F. Besides, it's only a half case.

    2005 Peay showing well.

2005's are running about $15 and scoring in the high 80s - low 90s. Same goes for the 2003's, if you can still find them. Avoid the 2004 - generally a shitty year for gamay-based wines. Don't shy away from DuBoeuf either, he's kicking ass lately.

NV Pinot Evil Vin de Pays de l'Ile de Beaute Pinot Noir ($5) San Francisco's the Wine Group initially made $15 wines from Santa Barbara County under the Pinot Evil label. Now the company has switched its source to Corsica, the French "isle of beauty" in the name, where Pinot Noir grapes (as well as labor) are much cheaper. This is a light-bodied wine with pleasant cherry and red plum flavors and notes of earth, pine and Christmas spices. For this price, it's amazingly good. Available at Cost Plus World Market.
Ridiculously good for ~$7 a bottle. Seriously.

More luv for Bichot Bourgogne Villes Vignes. Under $20 with tax and drinking really well. Lots of ripe fruit and just enough minerality to remind you that it's Burgundy and not Cali.

Digging around in the wine smeller tonight looking for something to cook with I stumbled upon a long forgotten box with something called South Sound Pinot, 2008. It was a budget wine at the time so I fully expected it to be completely shot.

Au contraire, mon frère. I remembered why I bought it. It tastes like Pinot should.

David Bruce makes a pleasantly jammy SC Mountain pinot that's usually in the $30 range.
Rhys is awesome, more focused and tart. And so is their price.

Is the color a dark red or a lighter ruby red? Any Pinot that is that light red color blows in my opinion. The best Pinots I have had were about $45 a bottle. One came from Sanford and the best was from Wolf Creek by Paseo Robles.
Still searching for a great bottle for $25.

    OK.

There's a few lighter colored red burgundies that go for a lot of $ and as usual it depends on what you like.

Sometime, if you can find one for < $50, try a Leroy Bourgogne rouge. It's a weird wine, like super tannic dried cranberries at first, but after some air, it's completely different and tasty.

Initially, the goal was for something in the sub $20 range. With that constraint, the Roche de Bellene Bourgogne rouge is great, but it's drier and more tart than most cali pinots.

Best value I ever came across in Pinot Noir was the 3 bottles of DRC Echezeaux I found in the University Village state liquor store in Seattle for $19.99 each. This was when I first moved back in '91. Think they knew what they had? I doubt it, it was in the closeout Bordeaux bin. Bought 'em all and drank 'em, memorable.

I'm a big fan of Windy Oaks and Burrell School. A few really good Cab Francs from that area too.

It's not "dark" like an inky Syrah, but it's not light and body-less either. See: http://m.klwines.com/p/i?i=1240230
