It's really ideal for a week-long summit because it takes a while to get there, and the long trip is more worth it when you get more than a weekend's worth of skiing in. I guess I don't understand why you think it shouldn't be a summit candidate.

I like Mammoth and Montana. I also would like to throw out the idea of a Jackson sequel (think Empire Strikes Back rather than say, Father of the Bride 2): a) it's the home of TGR, b) it's Jackson Hole, c) 2005 was awesome, but I think it could be even more off-the-hook given another try
Its not that I think mammoth shouldn't be a candidate, it was just that yogachik came in here talking about how it was soooooo frustrating just because people weren't voting for what she wanted, which seemed kinda silly to me.

Again though, where is it written in stone that mammoth has to be late season and just a weekend? Since its been so succesful, why not make a annual mammoth summit at whatever time of the year seems best, and for as long as people will stick around? Then we can have another one at a different place each year.

I agree that Jackson would be awesome. I've never skied there, and of course have always wanted to, but I think we should wait till they have the new tram up and running. Isn't it supposed to be the year after this one?

There always seems to be a division as to whether or not we shoudl do the summit mid-winter, or wait till March so people with Spring Breaks can make it. Why not just move the Mammoth mini to one of those dates and have another summit mid-winter?

Is it a matter of parochialism or what the best resorts and conditions will most likely be, tied in with some of the other factors, like if someone who can actually organize will step and some of the other things that make a great Summit? I have no issue traveling, but it has to be a place where there's a weeks worth of great skiing.

So let's go to Cham and get 'er done right.

While this is a FANTASTIC idea there are some problems.

for every $1 we would only get at best, half that in Euro land.

So maggots would be forced to settle for ha'penny blow and hookers.... which is not so cool.

(so once again I vote for nowhere... lets take a year off and let the anticipation build)

If the Y-chick will organise, I'll vote for Mammoth. If someone else really steps up for Montana, I think that's the other solid prospect.

I can see skiing at Mammoth for a week if you include the Eastside Sierra touring options. If you're limited to riding the lifts, I actually can't see skiing at Mammoth for an entire week, even when the entire mountain is open. Sure, it's big, but not that big, and June doesn't add much in the way of interesting terrain.

I think a good way to deal with the SoCal option is have the Mammy Mini a little earlier - still in late spring, but before they close half the mountain. But even after they close the outer lifts, much of the best terrain is still served by the Gondy and 23 anyway.

I would think that with all of us in on it that we could rent a kick ass pad at Big Sky/MB and it wouldn't cost all that much. Now we just have to find a place big enough and somebody foolish enough to rent out a pad to a large group of people from "the internet". I'll step up and look into it.

I'd be down for mammoth, or even montana. Hell going back to jackson would be fun too. ANYTHING BUT UTAH. NO THANKS.

Oh, and Phil/DK and I had our own little "mini summit" last weekend in the olympic mountains. Too bad nobody had a camera...

Since we have had problems with people stepping up with hosting and orgainzing the summits maybe we should take a differnt approach. Instead of voting on a location then hoping someone will steup to organize it, maybe we should get people who want to host it first and give us an idea of what they have planned. We could then vote on the plans instead of the location alone.

The olympics don't just give the event to a city, then hope they will accept it and build a bunch of crap for it. While a 60-80 person summit is much smaller by comparison, it is still too large to get anything done if no one is really set on leading it.

I can never make the mammoth minis, but by all accounts the crew out there has done an outstanding job putting them on. If YC wants to step up and organize a mammouth summit the I think that is the best "plan" I've heard so far and we shoudl let her do it.

What is required for 'hosting'? Unfortunately the only summit I've made it to was a Hood summer mini, so I don't know what's up. I'd be delighted about a Montana summit...I think the terrain certainly deserves it, and I think it's Montana's time considering it narrowly lost out to the CO repeat last year.

Also keep in mind Jackson/the 'Ghee ain't that far away, 3-4 hour drive. People would probably want to pool together for rental cars or gas money anyway, skiing in MT requires a fair bit of road travel.

Look at the poll results. Sure the very few MT mags voted for MT, but it is clearly in the lead right now. The only other one even in the race is UT and almost all the people who voted for that are in UT.

Anyways, if there is a Big Sky/Moonlight summit, the planning would be pretty easy since they are both the same mountain and you can get a dual lift ticket, plus there is loads of touring right there, and Bridger is an hour away and most people will have to travel right through Bozeman anyways.

In any case, it will be easy to get lodging at Big Sky if we collectively decide to do it there. There are lots of houses and condos for rent and also a fair number of actual resort lodging/ski packages.

When an organizer is found and contacts need to be made, I'd be happy to give them a primer in negotiating the best deal with the resort sales people.

Mammoth summit would be fun, and february always seems to bring some good powder days. On the other hand, I would love to go to Montana and check out Bridger and the other resorts in the area. Just my 2 cents

    Montana is the obvious choice.

The summit in Colorado last year was a failure because it was planned around the organisers schedule.

The key is to go in the middle of Winter when the snow is good, and have a central area to stay the entire time. Snow is good when it's good. If that doesn't work into your schedule, MAKE IT WORK.

I agree, the shedule last year was retarded. Then the front range was dumped upon while everyone else got skunked. Sorry, but I'm not driving 8 hours through nasty weather to aspen or wherever the fuck max decided was a good idea, to pay money to ride a lift, when I could drive ten minutes to loveland and ski 14" of fresh.

I like Mammoth. As much as yogachick and I have differing opinons on stuff, she is fucking awesome when it comes to organizing stuff and making sure everyone is up to speed on what's going on. Mammoth would be awesome!
