LUXEMBOURG glugs more than 15.5 litres of alcohol per person in a year, more than any other country. One explanation is that the duty on alcohol is relatively cheap in the tiny nation, encouraging booze tourism from its more heavily taxed neighbours. No such explanation for the Irish, however, who quaff 13.7 litres a year, according to the World Health Organisation. European countries, with their cultural acceptance of alcohol, tend to dominate the top places. In America, where stricter minumum-age requirements apply, the average person drinks 8.6 litres a year.

I'm not exactly sure how I compare to the per capita average... All I know is that when I go to the Czech Republic to visit family, I consider it my national duty to drink many beers in order for CZ to maintain the #1 spot

Didn't read the article, but wonder where the stats come from. Actual alcohol *purchased* in a country? If so, I know the Swedes in Southern Sweden are pushing up the #s in Germany, Denmark, and Poland. My family in Karlshamm never ever buy alcohol in Sweden. They go on missions across the sea to get it where it's cheaper. I went with them on one mission and it was comical watching random Swedes pile their hatchbacks full of beer and booze and turn around and get right back onto the ferry for the return.

Nobody drinks pure alcohol. I would assume they add all the alcohol contained in the various alcoholic beverages someone would consume.

So what would 10L pure alcohol/year consumption be in terms of...
hard liquor: 25L = about 850 shots (1 oz)
beer: 200L = about 565 beers (north american 355 ml size)
wine: 90 L = 520 glasses of wine (175 ml)

I got that beat.

My point was that there are other lists regarding Wine Consumption and Beer consumption. This one clearly states "alcohol" so takes all types into account, including liquor (Van_Skier... thanks ). Luxembourg doesn't even register on the above Beer/capita list, so must make it up in some other way.

I love the booze industry. The one vice a person can make a living in and everybody everywhere consumes. They're measuring the amount of alcohol which is how governments tax the producers. The reason Jack went from 86 to 80, they don't care how many bottles you sell, it's how much alcohol you sell.

Looking at the beer graph reminds me that not all beers are created equal. Amercian and "lite" beer don't count. I admire those Czechs though! Come on Canada, we have to down more pops. It's almost 6 am here: time to get going!

That first survey was rigged, and complete rubbish. The second one was better: Australia up where it belongs. We will never win these things unless it's about beer.
I wonder how they measure those many european countries where home brewing (and distilling) is a national sport?

It's pretty impressive, though, when every person is considered. Most kids aren't drinking that much booze, for example. And then you've got your teetotalers. But yeah, then you've got plenty of people who are doing their best to make up for the underperformers
