I think I know what to do, but WWMD?

Last night someone broke into Mrs. Gadget's place of employment and stole all the computers; most, if not all, were laptops. One of the laptops taken contained personal information for each employee, i.e., drivers license numbers, social security numbers, health insurance card numbers, etc. Everything scum like the perpetrators could ever want to unleash the hounds of identity theft hell was on this one laptop.

What steps should we take to protect ourselves?

Just like losing your wallet, you have to cancel or have changed the identifying numbers of that stuff you can. I would think that a DL# could be changed by request. A SSN would be a pain in the ass, but you can use monitoring services to alert you if an acct is started with that SSN. The heath insurance, etc would seem like the easiest to get changed. Time is of the essence though.

Kick her boss in the head for having sensitive shit like that on an unsecured laptop.

If it was secure don't worry about it, they'll likely simply wipe the drive and reload some OS on it. Just because some personal info was stolen doesn't mean it will be used.

Eye gouge. Followed by a pie in the face and the ever trusty seltzer bottle.

But seriously...notify all of your creditors. Keep an eye on credit reports. Contact SSA and DMV for suggestions.

    twice.

Utah is not a state with a credit freeze law, but you can put a fraud flag on your credit report. here is more information about it: http://www.fightidentitytheft.com/flag.html

note: i hope you arent planning on getting any loans anytime soon.

Start making phone calls. Credit card companies; SS administration; DMV. Explain the situation. I'm sure that they will provide you with valuable info.

This may be a blessing in disguise. If all else fails, you can move to Moorea and live off of the land.

    It made me laugh too.

I need to check with the Pope to see if this is, in fact, irony, or merely coincidence.

It is currently quite common to hear the word ironic used as a synonym for incongruous or coincidental in situations where there is no “double audience,” and no contradiction between the ostensible and true meaning of the words. Two examples of such usage:

Ironically, Sir Arthur Sullivan is remembered for the comic operas he found embarrassing, rather than the serious works he hoped would be his legacy.

Adolph Coors III was the former heir to the Coors beer empire. Ironically, Coors was allergic to beer.

The American Heritage Dictionary’s usage panel found it unacceptable to use the word ironic to describe mere unfortunate coincidences or surprising disappointments that “suggest no particular lessons about human vanity or folly.” This definition still allows the above usage but excludes examples like Alanis Morissette’s “It's a traffic jam when you're already late” for a meeting, unless perhaps the topic of the meeting were traffic congestion, not something implied by the lyrics of “Ironic”.
