"2.30am to hike the Wells. You in?"
silence....more silence..."alright. What route?"
"rattlesnake. Start the hike at 4. Be down before noon. 3300' vert. Might have to boot the entire climb."
"Bringing the skins just in case?"
"Yep." See you tonite."
Next call.... "Yo. What do you think of the Wellsvilles Friday?"
"Sure. Who's going?"
"Call you later about the time. Peace"
Forward to 3.45 this morning...Myself, a friend Pete, Hunterski, A friend Dane (SP??) and a photog/friend John
"Warmer temps than expected. Should of freezed at the top. Concerns of wet slides, wet slabs, mush and mashed potatoes. What route and if there is any concern, shout it out at anytime."
Off and running to catch the sunrise atop the Wellsvilles this morning under the light of our lamps. Snow was mushy, thin layered, wet. 4 of us skinning, Hunter post holing. Crazy but he did more vert in the same amount of time that we did and beat two people up.
Fastforward to the sunrise. As the deep blue sky hung over us, the stars and city lights glistened. The horizon soon turned from yellow to orange to red. A ball of fire rose over the Bear Rivers, alpenglowing our soon to be turns and our faces. Onward we push.
About 3/4 of the way I run into equipment issues......bladder broke and soaked my lower half. Empty the pack and ahhh hell...eat soe pizza. John and Dane show up and we begin to boot it...the trail ends in a snow field..skins back on...skins off...skins back on...skins off....skins back on.....saddle reached. John radios in...i'm burned. Stopping here.
The four of us contiue on and chose our lines that were anything from glorious but great nonetheless. 2 inches of cream on top of a hard laer which made it hard to hold an edge. The snow bcame thicker as we headed down...soup like by the bottom.
We did have a cool shot along a pretty unique rockband with a little ephemeral water fall. This is where i think the best turns were made...in old avy debris. Skied the gully out and then into the trees before hitting the road and back to the beers.
Roundtrip...5.5 hours. Backcountry is considered closed until further freezing!
