    New Board Advice Please...

I was looking to pick up a new board, but I'm torn between a few. I am currently surfing a tired 9.0 Josh Mohr. I was hoping to get a board that would be a little more versatile. I love my board, and long boards in general, but I was hoping to get a board that I could surf more places, and in bigger surf.

I normally surf the pier in Huntington, and in San Diego (I'm not sure where), and now I have a place to crash in Newport OR, so I see myself going there more. I was worried that a long board may not be suitable for all conditions (particularly larger surf) and I've broadened my option range. I'm not a super hard charger or anything and mostly enjoy just cruising, but something faster and more maneuverable is entirely acceptable too. I just don't know how to read between the lines for the different designs. These are the boards I'm looking at:

    good morning

any jeff johnston board would work.
the 7-6 tanker would be a perfect everyday board in hb or newport or.

For the price of a new Aviso you could buy a slighty used thruster and a longboard, which it sounds like you might like.

Otherwise talk to a shaper. the range of shapes you selected is so broad it's not even funny. From a fatboys thruster to an old 50/50 rail longboard.

Ok then, who would be the most versatile? I'm leaning to the tanker, for two reasons. 1) it seems long enough to still be able to surf lazily like a long board, and short enough to perform and be able to catch larger waves. 2) I'm kinda scared I'm limiting my surf experiences to long boards and not experimenting with others.

But, am I right in thinking long boards can't surf bigger waves, or should I be able to rock a 9 footer in double overhead? And I'm not familiar with the fish, or what I should expect from it. Any insight on this?

Here is the new short list:

I understand that Aviso boards are a bit more pricey, but I want to support the local-ish company... Besides it's kinda neat surfing an exotic.

    Thanks.
